Deborah had Ginger tied off to a post in the yard today while she was doing some yard work. Ginger got to the end of her leash slipped her harness and took off. Luckily someone a couple blocks down was able to help corral her for my wife. Apparently she tried to slip out of the harness a couple times on their walks today too, especially when she didn't want to go the way Deborah wanted to.

So, 2 questions, first how tight does the (kurgo car) harness need to be? After the chase Deborah tightened the front up more like a collar than we had it before but I imagine she can still yank it off if she gets turned around and shakes a lot.

Also, what, if anything is the trick to tying her out and not having her escape? Should we get a martingale collar for that?

I don't know the configuration of the Kurgo harness since I only use collars (flat nylon) for my crew. That said, their collars are tight enough that they can't slip them - at least not without taking off their ears in the process. Basically I keep their collars just tight enough that I can slip two fingers between the skin and the collar - which can be problematic given the hair involved.

I have one who likes to try to slip out (Avalanche) and thankfully he's an Alaskan and has a thin coat but he'll still try - time to time - to get loose when we're out. If you have the collar tight enough that they can't slip it, you're going to think it's too tight - there's a fine balance between them not being able to get loose and them being choked ... good luck with that one!

I use the kurgo only for car trips, for walking I use a prong safetied to flat buckle collar with a carabiner. You could also use a Martingale collar and attach short strap from the front ring of the kurgo to a Martindale or flat buckle collar.
As for tightness, I have the chest straps so I can fit 2 fingers snug under the strap.

fit is key, you do want it tight enough to not back out of but still able to slip over the head to take on and off, the strap around the chest should be tight as well.
working with a long lead with commands is also key, or in a dog park. to get then used to coming back to you.

is your yard not fenced?

My only 2 cents here.............I do not believe using a martingale is appropriate for a tie out situation. Maybe someone else will chime in on that, but I would think the dog could choke using a martingale and your dog pulls on a tie out. Maybe the others didn't see that portion of your question.

I'd prefer putting up a run to tying out. My boxer (25 years ago) had to be tied out using a flat collar at a home I rented briefly in college. She managed to throw her hindquarters into a trash man hauling away a huge pane of broken glass and the wound took forever to heal.

It taught me any kennel/run/fence is better than tying out because other creatures (and people) can get to your dog while staked out in the open.

I agree on the flat buckle collar instead of prong or martingale when unsupervised.

If she is a fighter on a tie-out then she probably shouldn't be on one. I've always used a good, pretty tight, flat collar to tie out by. If she insists on pulling so much she chokes herself then being on a tie out probably isn't going to be for her. Not at least for a while until she settles down to the area and is more willing to just chill. If you are dealing with any separation anxiety that can make staking out more difficult as well. The only harnesses that are somewhat slip proof have a belly belt. Not sure how the kurgo is but similar to what Jenn posted Ruffwear have great harnesses of many styles. I use a weiss walkie leash. It acts like a harness but is just a leash that wraps behind the dog's legs. The harder the dog pulls in any direction the tighter the leash gets on their chest. They cannot back out of it but it won't damage them like pulling too hard on a throat collar can. Works well for walks. Won't work for a tie out though. Most of us have a different tool for every task we do. Certain harness to pull, different one to walk with, one collar for tags, different collar to tie out by in case it breaks or slips for some reason. It's hard to have one tool that does it all unless you have a really easy dog, and few huskies are ever what I would consider easy dogs. lol.

A friend did that.
His dog jumped the fence and hung himself as a result.

I have a Kurgo harness, and like Amy, I just use it for securing the dog in the car.
He can't get out of it with two fingers tightness around the neck.

In the 3rd picture at the bottom of this post (My "Bodhi" signature) you can see a recreation harness without the belly band.
He slipped out of this one twice and led me on quite a merry chase.
This is why I ordered the one with a belly band.
He hasn't been able to get out of it.

I suspect most dogs can be successfully tied out using a fake buckle collar or two. Worn the proviso that there is nothing within the tether circumference that can be climbed on, twisted around etc.

But, and this is a big but...for a dog line Z'ev, I'm not sure it's advisable unless someone is supervising, if out of sight, at least within hearing distance and checking every few minutes. I was hoping we could manage Z'ev in the same fashion as Ami when we are off property, which is overhead runner with dog house. At this point, don't Sr that happening. I'm seriously afraid he will hurt himselfl or worse, kill himself. He just has NO tether sense. So, for Z'ev, it's crate, sad to say.

As for attachment, just about everything I've read on the subject says flat buckle, as in belt buckle,.not quick release buckle, is the way to go. On tether, left alone, dogs can and will, cheese their harnesses off. My suggestions re Martingale are for leash walking.

My Really a collar should not be used for a tie out due to choking and esophagus crushing. Some can probably use a good, pretty tight, flat collar to tie out by but that should be a calm dog that can chill out on it. Make sure the dog can not get close to anything that they can accidentally hang themselves on. A harness is always better there. Harnesses should be tight around the chest belly say effort to put in two fingers. I suggest a tad looser (armpit area) if hiking or long duration some rub. Can you do a runner set up? That I find helps them lose some "fight". I have even had a runner attached to the same ground level tie out but then ran the line to a high spot....tree roof pole etc. There is so give and it offers the dog more freedom. Just keep the line from "hanging areas". A houdini harness by Indi dog has a belly band, I have seen this harness and yes that belly band definitely keeps the harness on the dog. I have the Whistle and have heard some good recommendations on the AKC Link collar. They are subscription based systems though to help you track when they leave the area. Garmin has some good but expensive ones for hunting dogs. I have not used them though.
