crate - Crate Training/Potty Training Question Empty
PostSubject: Crate Training/Potty Training Question   crate - Crate Training/Potty Training Question EmptyFri Jan 26, 2018 11:28 pm

Okay, I need help because I am so overwhelmed and I'm not sure what to do when to do it nfuejvbeive. I am getting a 12 week old husky today and I am not looking forwards to potty training her lol. What I need help on is when exactly do I put her in the crate? Does she need access to it all day (open) and then I close it at night? And if I close it at night (which is supposed to prevent potty accidents while I'm sleeping) do I just let her out in the middle of the night and then put her right back in? And when would I stop doing this. Because I have a bell that im planning on teaching her to ring, but If Im locking her in a crate at night, how is she supposed to learn to ring it when she needs to go? It doesnt make sense to : Crate her for 2-3 hours, take her out, make her ring the bell, and then go outside. The whole point of the bell is so that willingly tells me she needs to go. Not by me waking her up, taking her out of her crate, and letting her go potty. I'm sorry if this made no sense. I'll clarify anything if needed..

Hi cousin ... at least at 12 weeks old she's going to be more adaptable than an 8 week old ... but I'm not sure how much more so.

I like you comment about leaving the crate open during the day - it helps them get the idea that the crate is theirs - if you also feed her in the crate, it reinforces that. When you call it a night - whatever your bedtime is - take her out and give her the opportunity to "go." Then yes, part way through the night she'll need / want to go out again (at least one time and probably more, sorry) After you come back in, recrate her - and she should naturally go to the crate if she's come to accept that that is her bedroom.

I *think* that if you hang the bell on the door so that it rings every time you go out she'll eventually connect "go out" and "bell" then all you have to do is teach her that bell doesn't equal play time!

@Amymeme, I believe, uses a bell and she can tell you better how to make that work, my thoughts are only from what I've read here.

crate - Crate Training/Potty Training Question Empty
PostSubject: Re: Crate Training/Potty Training Question   crate - Crate Training/Potty Training Question EmptySat Jan 27, 2018 1:49 am

I got my puppy around the same age. As far as potty training this video helped me a lot. https://youtu.be/2TPSIL7oKwM She has only ever had one accident in the house but that was because no one was watching her. As the video will mention, the general rule for how long they can hold their bladder is an hour for however months old they were. And yes, I did wake up every three hours in the night when she was a puppy, but then it's only every 4 hours, then 5 hours and so on until they are able to sleep through the night. Now when I say it's time for bed she heads to her crate, when I let her out for the morning she waits by the door. If she has to go potty during the day she'll stand in front of me and bark to let me know. It's a lot of work but it's worth it in the end.

With plain crate training, one thing that helped me was I would hide treats in her crate and leave it open. She would find them and recognize the crate as a good thing. Now whenever I'm just hanging out in my room (which is where I keep her crate) she will just voluntarily go into her crate for a nap.
