| So i have done this trail 3 times now with Jack, it is my close training mountain for hiking. you gain about 1870ft in 1.6m. the issue is there are some rock sections near the top that Jack just can not stand, he is not a rock dog. i am trying to break summit in 1hr, i did it in 1.25h this last time as i swear Jack stole about 15 min of that time! I love having him with me but i just wish he got better with the rocks, i think he is getting worse based on the tantrum he threw this last time! when we started back down from the summit he full on walked back up the mountain when we hit the rock section, i stood there yelling for him and he just wooooed back at me, sight unseen! then he walked back down, looked at me and then went back up! i had to walk back up to get him and lead him down on the leash till we were out of the rocks then he was fine, damn husky! we had a cold snowy day above the clouds frost tree at summit summit Jacks looks when i came back up to get him, you can just see the attitude! back to the car all frosty _________________ |

| Dang these are some BEAUTIFUL pictures!!!! Jack doesn't like the rocks cuz of his paws or what? They move easily so he's unsure of them? He's looks awesome, and yeah, I see the attitude |

| Awesome photos and you're blessed to have Jack to hike with! If we couldn't complain about our Huskies, we'd just annoy people with our endless bragging, haha. You're making me wish Florida had mountains. We are hiking hill country in Texas soon, but I love the frost and altitude you enjoy. Jack seems like a perfect Husky. Aw! |

| You don't have to go through the trouble, Jennifer. I can picture it now. I thought it was maybe the smaller, crumbled rocks that gather together making moving on them, unstable or even sharp. Kohdi does good on the big boulders but if the smaller crumbled rocks are around, he generally tries to go around them. |

| We don't have mountains but what I'd do is take the time to go a bit slower a few times while using a long leash and help him learn to negotiate rocks. If you are directing his path to match the one you pick out and telling him to wait, jump, continue... he'll probably feel less overwhelmed and think about it better until it's no longer an obstacle. Lack of option to refuse things also greatly helps all animals just go ahead and get it over with instead of hesitating, debating it, not wanting to face the difficult part, and ultimately refusing.
To adjust to all the various terrain I prefer to start all mine with 10' ganglines from nordkyn that I just use carabiners to connect to harness and a belt or double ended snaps could be used to attach the loops to collars for a lighter, smaller clip. It's also useful for more wooded areas with lots of fallen trees and the same concept applies to my more water phobic ones. If I keep them near me and give instructions for getting down the hidden bottom of the stream and how to work around changes in depth and current they adjust a lot better to water than if given choices they don't understand what to do about. My first 6-12months is usually spent on rope endlessly going over obstacles we will run into and proper ways to handle it including when we have to cross roads or populated areas near the state parks or wildlife management land. Aside from her back starting to cause trouble my 10+ year old is not phased by anything from going to the fairgrounds to floating across a lake (I'm thinking of just putting her in a life jacket next to my new kayak) to climbing 20' high rock faces with a padded harness and some help.
Another option is an agility class. I also find it's better for improving obedience with the spitz breeds than typical obedience classes that they fail to see a point to the activity and most allow us to apply our own commands for negotiating obstacles. However, there is cost, vaccine requirements, and any prior obedience requirements individual places have so it's not an easy option for a lot of people. You also run into a few idiot instructors on occasion and I left one class for my previous sibe puppy despite paying for it. I've picked out another place to start my current husky mix. She is a complete klutz that has the opposite problem of happily flinging herself off cliffs to get somewhere she wants if I don't watch her. |
