| Hello and first of all thank you for making this page to help educate all of us Husky lovers! I am a proud Mamma of our Husky, Star! When I was a teen I had a Husky named Angel and due to issues with my mother and our living situations she was given away without my knowledge. It took me over 16 years to be able to look at a Husky without balling my eyes out. Star was a pup who was in a great rescue group here in Oklahoma and I decided I wanted to foster anytype of pup. At the time I was looking more for a Pitbull since they are another very misunderstood breed. I was messaging back and forth with the founder of the group for hours when she asked if I'd be willing to foster a Husky who has had many people give up on her. I hesitated at first since I knew I'd fall in love with her and my husband wouldn't be very happy with me lol. Well my husband didn't even know at the time I was going to foster any pup. (He was in London on business) We already had 3 dogs and 4 boys and we were renting so he didn't want to take on anymore. Well, The founder of the group Jamie, who is AMAZING BTW, told me Star's stories and thought we'd be a good fit since I had a Husky in the past. I filled out the form and was approved right away to foster. Jamie and I messaged back and forth all night about my Husky and Star. I was told she was at a shelter as a stray with nothing but a fresh tattoo from her spay and a shaved belly. Jamie had found someone who was missing her, picture showed her scar and was identical to Star. Well they called the person and he claimed it wasn't his dog and he didn't wan't "another". So after the stray hold was up Jamie brought her into the rescue. When the rescue doesn't have fosters, Jamie puts the pups up in a very nice boarding facility. Well shortly after she was posted for adoption (shots and full health check up) a family came in wanting to adopt her. One of the issues was this family had a pet rabbit... As Husky owners/Lovers we all know that is a very bad mix. Jamie told them specifically she doesn't like anything small and she will kill the bunny if she has the chance. Well they assured her there will never be a time when she will have a chance to get to the bunny. After Jamie went back and forth with them she started to feel the family were responsible and educated enough to adopt star. So the family came and met with Star and they all loved her!! This family went ahead with the adoption and gave Star what Jamie thought was a Furever loving home. A bit later Jamie gets a call from Stars family upset since somehow Star got ahold of their bunny and killed it. The family then gave Star back which I'm sure broke her heart. Star went back into boarding and started having serious tummy issues and wouldn't eat. When Star came to the rescue she was only 36 lbs!! Jamie right away found a foster for her to assure she got the love and attention she needed. Well soon after Jamie was contacted by the foster and they were no longer able to foster her. (I never asked why he couldn't foster her anymore) This is about the time I came into the picture! Well it was maybe 2 am (CST) I text my husband in London telling him that he might Kill me lol. So I then text him that I am picking up a husky in the afternoon and were going to be fostering her and he has no say so. Needless to say he wasn't thrilled, but he said fine (since he had no choice)lol. I load up my kids at 11:30 am and we head to meet Jamie, the previous foster, and Star at a local pet shop. As soon as I seen her I started to tear up and had to choke it back down. She was even more beautiful then the pictures and videos I seen. As soon as she seen me she jumped right up on my kids and I. We talked for a bit and she informed me of her tummy issues and that they really thought she had heartworms but all the test came back negative. I assured her with a bit of love and work she will start gaining weight and her tummy will get better. She gave me a big bag of the food she was on and we hugged and I took her home. She came in showing a bit of aggression with my other pups but as soon as they stood their ground she was fine and playing. Star was a little skiddish at first when my husband came home that night. I'm guessing some men must have not been very nice to her. My hubby crouched down on the floor and started giving her love! (I thought Yeah he's not gonna kill me!! lol) Well then I started seeing why she may have been given up on so many times. Anytime she went on carpet she would potty on it! All the bedrooms had carpet so it was a little annoying. I told my hubby I bet she was an outside dog most of her life and she is looking at the carpet as grass. So him and I would clean up after her and worked on positive reinforcement with pottying outside. We got a gate from the rescue group and then a friend gave me a crate to use. Whenever we would leave the house she would destroy EVERYTHING!!! We put the gate on the stairs that lead to my little 2 boys room since that was her fave spot to poo, and kept all of our bedrooms closed. After a month or so she was doing way better with house training! Everynight she'd sleep on our bed right next to me. She started feeling so at home and you could see how happy she was. I noticed she really didn't like her food at all and still had horrible diarrhea! So I talked to Jamie and let her know I am going to work on slowly switching her to my dogs food (science diet at the time) she was ok with it and offered to help with the cost. Knowing she was doing alot out of her own pockets I said its fine I will cover it. Star was doing a little better with the diet change, but I wasn't happy enough. Star still was having diarrhea bad and one of my pups allergies started up so I decided to look up other food that can help with it all. I checked with Jamie who said she trusts my judgement. We then slowly switched to Call of the Wild Salmon and started seeing Star having solid bowl movements for once! Star was eating all of her food and putting on weight! Oh, and as any other husky she decided to take off any chance she got! LOL Luckily someone is always home and we would take off after her as soon as she ran out the door! Thank God we always got her back even though I did almost cause a multi car crash blowing a stop sign on a busy road while honking my horn yelling out the window please don't hit my dog or me! (that wasn't fun, I posted an apology on my nextdoor site) About 6 months after we started fostering my hubby kept telling me we can adopt her, but no more fostering. Our kids were very attached to her as were we. With tears in my eyes I told him I want to save more dogs and they need fosters to do so. We have so many stray pups out here and most shelters put them down! Well Jamie contacts me that someone was interested in Star and asked if I can meet with him. At this time I was helping the group alot with picking up pups and transferring them so she knew me very well. So I was leaving to meet with the man and my 7 year old was hysterical. I honestly couldn't calm him down. Well then of course I start crying and go back to when my Husky was given away as a teen. I told him I am just meeting the man it doesn't mean the adoption will go through, then left. Well, I wasn't happy with the guy letting his little dog wonder the parking lot with no leash. He also seemed like he was thinking Star will be like his little pup and not run. I told him several times that a Husky will always run if they have the chance. So I left and messaged Jamie as soon as I got home about the meet up. My best friend was in from Chicago (where we are originally from) so I had a deep talk with her about the situation and that I think I am going to ask my Hubby to adopt Star. Seeing my kid the way he was killed me inside and I was so in love with her! My husband had to do a side job and so I messaged Jamie about the situation with my son and how I was worried Star will go through another depression if she leaves us. Then I told her that I don't want to adopt her cause then I can't foster anymore and I know they needed fosters. Jamie goes on to tell me (omg I swear I love her!) "We can always find more fosters, but what we can't find is homes that are as patient and loving as yours. You have done so much for Star and she has come so far I would hate to have her revert back and the next person not be like you all are." So again I'm a big baby and start crying and thanking her! I told her I will talk to the hubby and see what he says. He comes home and I tell him "I have something very important to talk to you about". He tells me "hold on" he runs into the house and comes out with a piece of paper folded and tells me go ahead. So I explain everything to him and tell him what Jamie said and dropped the bomb... "Honey, I really think we should adopt her, she has come so far with us and how our son reacted, I just don't think I can see her go anyplace". He then starts laughing at me and hands me the piece of paper... It says... we should adopt Star. I started laughing and called him a name I will not say on here lol and said "you know me to well". So I called Jamie who yelled excitedly "YEAH"! She is still such a good girl, but likes to poo in my little guys room... and eat anything on the counters, tables, trash cans... LOL But she is my baby! We bought a house a few months after adopting her and have a HUGE yard that isn't fully fenced yet. We have to keep her on a tie out since she climbs the little fenced part, but she is only out there when we are watching her!! Thank you for reading my story sorry it is so long but it felt good to tell our Foster Fail story that ended with a Pup who was tossed out like trash so many times finding a Furever home where we will NEVER give up on her!! |

| I don't normally read posts that is a long as yours and have no paragraphing - it's hard on my old eyes! But I'm glad I did yours!
Star is one very lucky little pup to have found/been found by someone like you!
Now, where's the pictures of all the pack?????

| Pictures please!
Soooo many people just don't understand the needs of huskies. Far too many think you don't have to walk them or they can get by with a couple short little 15 minute walks a day. No way. Glad she's doing well with you. Thank you for rescuing. A lot of people just see rescues as taking on other people's problems and that is just a sad way to look at a dog that didn't have a choice in the matter. Welcome to the forum! _________________ |

| How wonderful for you and for Star! It sounds similar to what we've been going through with Misty. And, yeah, it's amazing how many people just won't listen when it's explained to them over and over about things you just CANNOT or SHOULD NOT do with a Husky, like the family with the bunny. I'm sorry they lost their bunny. Poor thing was a victim of them not listening.
Good luck with the continued training! We currently put Misty on a supervised tie-out in our back yard, too, until we can shore up the fence. The crazy critter can clear a six-foot privacy fence. It looks like we're going to have to go with a privacy fence/invisible fence combo.

| OMG! Amazing story. Definitely was a hard read because I kept losing my place but let's just say my eyes started to get glossy.
I am so glad Star found a Furever home. I love these stories and it makes me just want to hug my Kota again and again. It's hard to know how much your own goes through so many different family even though it isn't their fault.
