I’ve had my husky pup for three weeks now - her name is Luna and she’s the sweetest little dog. The first day we had her, her poop seemed fine. But it was all downhill from there! We kept her on the same food they gave us for her, but starting on Day 2 she’s had diarrhea pretty much ever sense. The diarrhea goes back and forth from being combination soft/liquid stools, to just really soft, to sometimes very liquidy. On Day 4 we took her to the vet for a routine checkup. They said to keep an eye on it but that it was nothing to worry about - it was mostly just soft stools at that point. When it didn’t get better after a couple more days, I began to get worried as the poops were becoming increasingly liquidy. On Day 6 I took her to another vet - one that I heard great things about. They checked her for parasites, which came back negative. They said it was probably a combination of the stress of a new home and getting into some cat food here and there (I’ve since moved the cat food high up). They prescribed her an antibiotic just for good measure and told me to keep her on it for five days. I did and it seemed like nothing changed! On Day 15 I started feeding her rice and beef in place of her dog food. It seemed to be working and on Day 18 she went back to the vet for boosters. I mentioned the poop again and they said to keep her on the rice and beef for a full week and to search for a dog food that is beef-based to start slowly introducing with the rice and beef. The poops were seeming to get better, but I have to admit she’s snuck some cat food here and there and I’ve even pulled cat poop out of her mouth. She has the diarrhea again and I was sure the cat food/poop was to blame. Last night (Day 21) I came home to diarrhea on the kitchen floor - two large helpings of it. She was alone for about 5 and a half hours. I noticed that there was a tiny drop with some blood in it and I was again very concerned. Today (Day 22) she has been having green diarrhea and when she pooped in the house I decided to poke around in it. I found lots of debris from outside - pieces of sticks and whatnot. But then I found one of my earrings! It was a stud-style earring with just the straight bar that goes through your ear and a flower on the end. I’m afraid that she’s torn an intestine or something...I’m completely at a loss for what to do. Her behavior has never changed. She’s as happy and perky as ever! And she hasn’t had any issues with vomiting. Just the diarrhea. I have no idea what to do or where to turn. Everything I’m reading says dogs usually pass earrings just fine. I’m concerned why the diarrhea won’t stop and why there was a drop of blood in it yesterday. She has no parasites, the antibiotic didn’t work...I’m just lost. Please help!

What food are you feeding and how long have you been on it at this point? You need to crate her when you can't keep an eye on her. Puppies and dogs explore the world with their mouths. Work on the drop it command so if she picks stuff up you can get it away from her. But to start I would crate her when not watching and gate her to the room you are in and don't let her wander where there's stuff low enough to get.

I would monitor. If you keep her out of everything then you should be in the clear in 24 to 48 hours usually.

They sent Precise with us when we first brought her home, but the diarrhea started while she was on it. My boyfriend couldn’t find that dog food at the store so he bought Pedigree. That’s when we switched her to the rice and beef. Someone suggested she may be allergic to chicken and to try a beef-based food if the beef and rice seems to be working. She’s always crated at night and when we’re not home and we of course watch her when we’re here. Clearly she has her sneaky puppy ways of getting into things since she got into an earring ????

You may need to do a deep clean on the house. Check under all tables and cabinets to make sure nothing else is laying under something. Chances are the earring was on a table and one just got knocked off or maybe something fell and it jumped under a cabinet and was missed during clean up. Having a puppy is the same as having a baby or toddler. It helps to put up gates so they can't get into rooms that often have things that could hurt them like laundry rooms or bathrooms. Tethering them to you so they can't sneak off or cram themselves into a space you can't reach them can help. Also gives you access to correct her picking up stuff if you notice she is working at something she shouldn't be.

Is this the beef and rice canned dog food by Pedigree? If so it still has chicken in it. It also has grain in it that many huskies have issues with. Check the ingredient label closely for both chicken and anything grains like barley or flour.

I made the beef and rice myself. Just plain white rice and beef with the fat drained out. I’ll definitely be sure to check for that!! We have her on a beef-based food now so I’m going to watch to see how she does with that. Hopefully we’ll start seeing some improvements.

It took us close to 10 days to break the cycle in our new baby Sasha; as others stated they love to explore everything with their mouths, that, plus the new home/environment can easily lead to watery poop. We tried the slow transition from Science Diet to her current, Blue Wilderness without any success. We could see foreign bits of matter in her poop, telling us that she was doing a wonderful job cleaning every nook and cranny of the house, and out of doors; we switched her to white rice, and boiled skinless chicken for a week, just to make sure that she wasn't experiencing any food allergies.

Gave her a de-wormier too for good measure, and closely monitored her activity level and water intake along with cleaning the entire house with Pine-Sol. Today her bowel movements are normal, and frequent, and last night for the first time, in the 17-days that we have had her, didn't have a single accident in the house.

Hopefully a thorough cleansing of your home, and watch that the pup isn't ingesting any garbage when outside, and things should return to normal soon.

I need help!! I'm a stressed new puppy mom too! We just got a 9 week old husky girl named Jenna. I literally did a week of research all day, every day, went to every possible website out there on huskies before I got her because I wanted to know everything I possibly could and be as prepared as I could before getting her. First off, I had read the rule that depending on how many months they, that is roughly how long in hours they need to be let out. So, ok, every 2 hours, definitely manageable! Turns out, she actually pees every 15-20 min!! So I've started to take her out that often. I take her out RIGHT when she wakes up because she pees right when she wakes up, I take her out 10-15 min after feeding times (she gets fed breakfast, lunch, dinner) and I take her out during and after playtime. She's been going to the bathroom in the middle of playtime so I just have to guess when to take her out while playing. I've gotten her to already start listening to basic demands like "come" and "get down" but going potty is a complete nightmare. She will go to the bathroom outside but then when I take her in, she goes to the bathroom 15 min after being let out! So then I catch her in the act, say NO firmly and take her back outside. I know potty training is a lot of work and I'm not a lazy person but to be outside literally every 15 min after having a 5-10 min break inside is insane! Is this really what it takes? Any tips? I don't use potty pads and my living room has a baby gate to prevent her from going to the back of the house so I have eyes on her almost at all times. Any advice?
Another problem is biting!!! What the heck?! My puppy has plenty of toys but is still using my poor children as chew toys also! How do you stop biting??

Sounds like my husky!! Why are you using the potty pads? They do WONDERS. My pup had them figured out in just a couple of days and is now 100% with them! For me, it’s unrealistic to be able to take her out as often as she has to pee. Like you said, it can be every 10 minutes! I have potty pads set up in the house and she’s great with using them. Huskies are very smart! You should place them in the spots she frequently goes in the house.
For the biting, all I can say is TEETHING TOYS. As many as possible. My pup loves her stuffed and squeaky toys as well, but every time she starts biting I stick her favorite teething toy in her mouth! I highly doubt your puppy is trying to hurt your children, but they spend about 6 months teething. She’s just in pain! I have a few different teething toys in my house so she can pick the ones that work best for her.
What food do you have your puppy on? Mine has had diarrhea since I got her a few weeks ago. It seems like she just has such a sensitive tummy! Have you found a food that works for your pup?

Thor is 4months old and has been home for two months. He is just now coming around when it comes to potty training within the last two weeks or so. Every pup is different and it is a trail and error process. As some have mentioned, try using the potty pads and making sure they are in the places she goes. Also make sure you've done a deep cleaning of the floors/carpets where you pup has going in the house, they will smell the smallest remnants. For Thor, Pads wasn't really an option, he likes to tear up/chew on anything. but he was crated non-stop in the home for the first month and gradually given more liberty as he demonstrated being able to handle it. He was initially leased to my side in the house until i felt i could trust him.
Not sure how exactly their feeding/water cycle is but I give Thor food and water 3 times a day and add water after he's been running in the yard for a while. Outside of this, the water and food are put away so that he not constantly drinking and eating all day and needing to go potty non stop. I cut his water off between 7pm and 8pm as 7 is dinner time for him. He goes out at 9pm, 1230, 3am, and 7am. If the food/water schedule helps try tracking when your pup goes and what is does (pee or poop) for about a week and see if there's any change). Try to use this schedule to take them hour and develop a routine. I have 3yr old twins so Thor acts like another child in the home and i treat him like one too.

As far as the poop texture. Thor had some pop issues at first but we put him on IAMS Smart Puppy for Large breeds (the solid form) and that helped wonders. His stomach is still sensitive so he can't have any chew bones or rawhides more than once a week. Anything more and his poop loses texture for a few days. He doesn't get any table food. He has daily treats i use only for training purposes. They are as you know very active so they defiantly need to stay hydrated. Again like a infant you don't wanna add too much variety too early and wanna keep the fluids steady.

As far as toy, Thor is picky with these too. He's not big on the Kong. He loves his squeaky balls and stuffed snake (this snake is the only stuffed toy I didn't have to throw out as he tore the others open and would eat the cotton and also ate the sock to another toy. no more of these for him.). More of that trail and error. The early months are very expensive trying to find the right food and toys to tame both their stomachs and behaviors.

Also Thor is a pre-madonna. He has a poop/pee area outside but it has to be clean or he won' t poop. Also he only poos along the wall side of his area although it's 15ft long and 4 feet wide. when we go out to the beach or park, he'll hold if for 4-5 hrs like the special case he is. Go figure.

Just be patient and hang in there Moms.

To NewHuskyMom- Thanks for the responses and input! To answer your question about the puppy pads...I had read that you shouldn't use puppy pads because it teaches them that they can pee inside and then you're basically potty training them twice..once to go potty on the pad and then to go potty outside. I did get some puppy pads when I first got her and she did use them a few times. As for the biting, I know she isn't trying to hurt my children, she's definitely playing! We bought her a TON of toys and every time she bites, we replace the arm or leg she is biting with a toy! I think she's made progress?? She's a VERY smart dog as everyone probably knows already so I know we will reach our training goals but yesterday was a very overwhelming day and I just wanted to see what everyone does! Also, the food I have her on is Blue Wilderness and she is doing just fine on it. Her poop is normal.
Today I'm going to try using the crate a little more than I usually do. I was only putting her in the crate when we left the house and at night and she's doing great in there! Its a fairly large crate, its definitely going to fit her as an adult. I know you aren't supposed to really use large crates for a puppy because they use it as a toilet, but it was free! She won't go potty in there unless I sleep through my alarm at night! She's pretty good about not peeing in there. But today I am going to start putting her in there when I need to shower or cook or just need to step away and can't keep my eyes on her so that she gets more used to the crate while we're home and to cut down on accidents.
