| Ello mates. I am feeding my huskies (male 3 years old female six months) Pure Balance (male) dry food and Natures Recipe Puppy all life stages. We have begun mixing in some Pure Balance Turkey Canned Food. My male is very very picky and wont eat much ever. He was classifed by a vet as a 36 hour eater which means he will eat dry food plain if half straved. He is thin but not very thin. Another vet he is of a good wieght. How much should I feed per meal for both of them? Should or can they have vitamin supps? I use Prosence All Life Stages Vitamins and Fish Oil. How can I get him to eat? He will sit and wait for the food then walk away. He has been like this since we got him at 3 years, owners had him super skinny like they just feed him dry (he was on Blue Life Protection dry food) and didnt care if he ate every other day. He was 51 and we got him to 61 at one point. At their house his heaveist was 56. Also is it okay for puppies to eat all life stages as I had read in a husky book thats better than feeding puppy food. Sorry for so many questions! |

| Male husky weight range is typically 45-60 pounds. Unless he's above average size wise, he's probably a healthy weight. Huskies tend to self-regulate their food to a degree.
How much exercise does he get? How much do you feed, and how often? Do you have other health concerns?
My 2 year old husky gets 2 cups of dry food a day. He gets 1 cup int he morning and another in the evening. I feed him Taste of the Wild. He goes for an hour long run in the morning, gets another 1 or 2 walks a day, plus play time in the yard. On top of that he gets some occasional half marathons and fun runs. I could probably up his food a little bit due to his activity level, but he's doing fine.
Most of the time when I hear about picky dogs, it's a self regulating dog that is being overfed. Huskies are lean, efficient dogs. They tend to look a tad on the thin side, and you should be able to feel ribs. They aren't a breed that requires a lot of food, and in fact most directions on food bags would have you overfeeding a husky. Some Vets don't take breed specifications into account and judge all dogs by a standard that doesn't really fit all breeds. |

I am unsure of his current wieght at the moment since he hates being picked up and we have only a human scale but Id say maybe 56 at the moment. He is average size. Even at his brief heavest he was thin and very muscley. Our vet said that he could even gain a few more pounds then. And this is a vet who likes lean dogs he thinks most are overwieght 1) He gets a few walks with our puppy (less now that she has begun training and is learning her commands outside) and he goes to the dog park an average of 3-5 times a week and runs wild. He is in very good atheltic condition he can run 1000 of laps around the park. He is a fairly calm husky. Maybe a low to medium energy level as he lays around the house calmly but outside will play and run. For the Pure Balance bag (I have two of the biggest Taste of The Wild Salmon and the bison one but he didnt care for it so its for his days he just wont eat and wants a a new falvor) says 3-3 3/4 cups, but no way he would eat it all. He just ignores it and walks away. He seems to eat maybe 2 cups like you said. He seems to like smaller servings so maybe I can split that up into 3 servings to make it smaller portions. I was worried if he wasnt eating what it said he would be defient etc but like you said many bags over shoot how much they need. Thank you!! |
