Hello Everyone! I'm new to the forum and am hoping you all can help us. For over a year now, my husband and I have been taking our Husky to the vet for a scaling/scabbing issue around her eyes. At first we thought it was zinc responsive dermatosis, but we've been treating her with zinc since this started. We started off with 60mg of zinc (dog specific) and are now giving her 90mg. We've also tried other supplements with the zinc to help her absorb it, including CLA, Fish oil, steroids, and topical ointment. The only thing that has made a difference is the steroid, but it only halts the progression, it has never gotten better. Each time we start to step her off the steroid, the area grows and gets irritated to the point that she scratches it open and it bleeds. We are desperate for help. We have spent so much money to not have a solution for this issue, and we are concerned for her heath. The vet did do a skin scraping and determined there were not mites or infection. Here is a picture of her today. Any ideas are welcome!

Have you looked into Lupus? It has a very similar physical appearance as ZRD does. _________________

I agree with Ashleigh, dog type Lupus specifically states a scaly scabby look, which looks like your pups. Skin scrapings will determine ZRD and Lupus, so I am unsure if you need to see another vet or a vet dermatologist, since your current vet could not determine ZRD, again to know for sure skin scrappings are done, not sure why your current vet did not do a scrapping to rule out ZRD, just odd to me.

You have to really do a punch biopsy to get a firm ZRD diagnosis. _________________

Thanks Ashleigh, I knew there was a specific skin test for ZRD, so for a vet to say they have it without doing the proper test, baffles me. I do know that using too much zinc can be as bad as the dog not getting enough zinc when they have ZRD. I would probably seek out a second opinion, or search for a dog dermatologist for this issue.

Thank you everyone! That helps a lot. I'll see if I can find a dog dermatologist in our area.
