| In the description of the Florida husky camp, Melissa said that Mya's prong collar popped. That happened to Bodhi at our obedience class when we first got him. The trainer said we should get a "Herm Sprenger" prong collar,. "German steel is so much better. Won't pop open." Ya-da-ya-da. So we bought one. We adjusted it so there wasn't slack. And then the same thing happened! It popped off and Bodhi escaped. In both incidents, conditions were exactly the same. The collar was loose; he wasn't pulling and he jumped or lunged. The collar popped open. I put this down to operator error and devised a backup. I tied a piece of webbing to the leash with an overhand knot. At the other end, I tied another overhand knot to a mini-biner. The biner attaches to Bodhi's dog collar. Of course since I devised the backup, the collar hasn't popped!

| Off topic but has to be said... Bodhi has the most beautiful brown eyes! Ok back on topic. I always do a back up too. I've had too many collars and leashes give for one reason or another so I do a double clip as well. Haven't had an issue since. |

| That's a great idea Michael!!! I'm going straight to Home Depot tomorrow after work to see if they have cabiners. I'm assuming that they should. I have extra rope that I ordered for the walky dog and I should be able to use that. I just bought her another prong collar today, but I will never feel as secure with them as I did before. I never thought those things could break. Guess nothing is ever 100 secure! |

| Oh wow, I am kinda scared to use mine now. I have one I use on my GSD and I sure in he** don't need him getting off the leash. |

| Bumping this up because this actually happened to us last night. While my husband and daughter were walking Misty after dinner, her prong collar popped open and Misty immediately took off. We live in a large, heavily wooded neighborhood with plenty of hiding places for any dog. Thank goodness, it's also away from most main roads -- and Misty is a very light-colored, silvery Husky, so it's easy to see her in the dark. My daughter was distraught, though -- she thought we'd lost Misty forever. It took about half an hour for us and a few neighbors to find Misty and catch her. Misty just can't resist someone holding out a hotdog for her. She was also wearing a Martingale collar, so she was easy to grab.
I've used prong collars on other dogs -- A trainer showed me how to fit and use one on my old Malamute -- but they're new to my husband. I'm guessing he didn't put the collar on Misty properly. Now he's afraid to use it. We also have an Easy Walk harness for Misty, which she's fine with unless she sees a squirrel or something she wants to chase; then she fights against the harness. I'm going to try the backup attachment idea here and attach it to the Martingale collar. Hopefully it will work until Misty is finished with her training and doesn't need the prong collar anymore.
