Husky Dominance? Empty
PostSubject: Husky Dominance?   Husky Dominance? EmptyWed Sep 20, 2017 3:49 pm

So I have a question regarding Huskies trying to me the alpha or to dominate.  I have to admit, Kota has the personality where she is very confident of herself which is awesome.

Well.....an incident happen.. Sort of funny Laughing  yet embarrassing as well.Embarassed

My Kota (female) likes to mount other dogs.  I know that she just wants to show her dominance which I will stop her on her track and she does listen.  But one incident happened when my BF and I went fishing. I had to go to the restroom and came back. Sat on the picnic blanket. Kota came up to me and licked my ears which she has never done before so I thought that she just wanted to give me some love because she missed me for that 5 minutes I was gone. Next thing I knew, she was mounting me from behind. I was so thrown off that I had no clue what happened and I couldn't grab her to stop her. She finally stopped but obviously we were cracking up at what she was attempting to do.  My BF thinks that she is trying to dominate me. Which may be true, but she doesn't do this at home.  This was about 1 month ago.

A week ago at the dog park, i was getting low to pet another dog and she tried to do the same thing.  Is this normal? Is she trying to dominate me? How should I show her that I am the alpha of the pack?? BTW- she doesn't do this with my BF.

Don't worry, you guys can laugh because this still cracks me up.  lol!

I am not huge in the dominance theory, but...... My female will mount all dogs, male, female, fixed not fixed, but never ever has tried to mount a human. Being able to give clear and concise commands at all times, have her work for her food, if you feel she is fully trained think again, training and huskies means a full time/life time commitment it never stops. I have had some people become offended when I have suggested continued training for an adult husky, because the owner took their dog to classes. And that is all fine and good, but not continuing with what you have done in the past for a selective hearing husky will make said husky back slide. You need to put yourself back in control or Kota will continue to do this.

Edit to add: It is partially a play thing, but it still involves dominate/submissive patterns. Miya mounts my gsd in play almost daily, and as you may have guessed, Miya is the dominate dog and my Sofie is very submissive.

Renee, I agree. It's definitely constant training for my dog. I don't let that slide. It's a bad habit that I don't like at all. There are dog owners who keeps telling me that it is fine and allow her to do that to her dog but to me it is not. I don't want that to be a habit for Kota.

Just wasn't sure if this was normal or not. I am hoping that maybe she just got overly excited for some reason but I do hope she knows that I am in control. It just really throws me off when it happened.

Thanks for letting me know that it is common that Kota mounts every dog. Just need to watch her every movement. I can tell when she is ready to mount so I stand watching her and she knows.

My mom has an australian kelpie that is a fixed female that does it too. She does it to gain attention and out of excitement. She's a bit of a brute of a dog. She's does whatever it takes to get the attention on her. They correct her constantly. The training should definitely help with her and trying to do it to you. Her and dogs...it might always be a thing. At least until she meets another dog who isn't going to put up with it.

Thanks Jenn! That definitely makes me feel a little better because I do wonder if I am too soft on her. I give her a lot of love and I just hope that doesn't mean that I am letting her walk all over me.

Hopefully it's not a thing for her but I will continue on for sure! My BF just keeps making fun of me because he is saying that I am currently on the bottom of the totem pole. Him being the Alpha and then Kota being the Alpha of me. lol. I don't think that is the case but I don't speak Husky so who knows what she is thinking.

I love on my dogs all the time and I'm the only one they even remotely listen to. There's a time and place for all things. Love when they are being good and stern when it's time to focus and listen. Being the one who feeds them and trains them makes a huge difference in forming a bond and respect. It also makes them more comfortable to be themselves with you. I got my big white male in February and he has been the most distant dog I have ever met. Didn't learn his name (still hasn't really), medical issues, didn't listen to anything, didn't care about anything or anyone. But in the last couple months he's really started to come along. He's learning things that I'm teaching him. I'm the one that feeds him and makes him work for it and now he's started sleeping on my side of the bed at night when he used to wouldn't even sleep in the same room as us at night. On the other hand he's become comfortable enough with me he wants me to play normal husky play while he doesn't trust my husband to play with him like that. He goads me by biting me in the butt when I'm facing away from him. I have to make them go outside while I workout because all the jumping in turbofire gets him excited and then he starts nipping at me and smack talking. Husband thinks it's because I'm smaller and he thinks he can make me do things. No, it's because I'm part of his pack and that's how the rest of the pack plays.
