Tomato thief! Empty
PostSubject: Tomato thief!   Tomato thief! EmptyMon Oct 02, 2017 2:09 pm

This is a new one for me.

I've had dogs dig in the garden. (My daughter used to slip Pop-Tarts to Kiki the Shiba Inu, and then Kiki buried them in the garden. No, we never ended up with a Pop-Tart plant, thank goodness.)

I've had a dog completely DESTROY a garden. (Storm the Malamute reduced a 20-foot by 12-foot newly-planted garden to a CRATER in one day.)

I've never had a dog steal stuff from a garden and EAT IT.  Misty, it seems, has a taste for Beefsteak tomatoes.  She's only stealing and eating the RIPE ones, thank goodness (green tomatoes and the actual plants are potentially toxic to dogs), and she does it rather delicately -- hardly damages the plants at all.  But ... Tomatoes?  REALLY?

Clearly, bunny netting is a laughable deterrent to a Siberian Husky.  Looks like I'll have to either move the garden next year or come up with better garden fencing.  Misty hasn't touched any of the melons or other plants or done any digging -- She just wants the ripe tomatoes.  Weird.  Could it be some sort of nutritional deficiency, or does she just like tomatoes?  She doesn't eat grass or anything else in the yard -- well, except for the occasional bee. I put up 4ft woven wire around my garden this last weekend because mine thieve it as well. My white loves tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes especially. But he massacred an entire crop of corn earlier when I just had the black 3ft rabbit wire around it all. He ripped all the stalks up or knocked them over and ate the actual ears. We literally got 2 ears of corn off of a 60 stalk planting. I think he just likes to play with them and the fact that they taste good to him somehow just makes it all the better for him. Not a whole lot of nutrients to be had from tomatoes for dogs so I don't think it's a sign of deficiency, more a sign of boredom.

the cherry tomato has gone crazy and he is picking all them off!!! him and sierra have also gotten their noses under the fence and pulled out a few zucchini plants and have eaten them and the veggies on it! and Finn has a taste for my cucumbers as well. i have not gotten ONE this summer.... next yr i am building the fence out and i guess i will have to figure out how to mow the grass as having the fence just around the raised part is not working. damn dogs

Yeah, originally our garden was on the outside of the fence. THEN we started having problems with bunnies, so we moved it to the inside of the fence where the dogs were. The American Eskimo Dog and the Lapphund didn't bother the garden at all, and they scared all the bunnies away, so we thought we had solved the problem. Then those dogs passed away and we got the Shiba Inu -- and when she got too old to chase bunnies, the bunnies came back! This time INSIDE the fence. So, we put up the bunny fence -- which also kept out the Shiba Inu. NOW we have Misty, who leaps over the bunny fence with ease to snitch tomatoes.  So, yeah -- Next year, garden goes back OUTSIDE the fence with bunny fence firmly in place!

I would think a solar powered electric fence for small animals might do the trick. Not one with a wallop like my bear fence, just a little buzz like for bunnies. They even make plastic fencing with it embedded, normally pricey but you have a small area.

Just adding anecdotally that my husky stole tomatoes out of our old garden as well. Not the corn or pumpkins or peppers- just the little cherry tomatoes. I'm glad to know mine isn't the only one. XD It was never a huge issue though because I had so many, she was doing me a favor.
