| My husky looks slightly different than all the other huskies. He has a tail that is an inch long and half his litter was born like that. He is 7 months and is very small for his age. He has bright blue eyes and all husky markings though. Both of his parents were on site and were full siberians, yet the mother also had no tail. His head is big for his body and his paws are small. He has not grown in a while and he weighs 25lbs. I just posted a picture of his tail for an example on his instagram: thethreedoggos801
Can someone please explain this to me? |

| It would help if you would post the picture here as well. Many of us don't have instagram. If born with a docked tail and mom has a docked tail as well they aren't pure no matter what the breeder may have told you. Huskies don't have super short tails unless physically altered. _________________ |

| I think he's referring to this: Which is definitely odd ... Since I have one who does the same thing, I liked your "indestructible leash" _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| I wonder if he's a dwarf ? Somewhere recently I came across something about dwarfism in dogs, possible re the post about the poor pup with the HOD. This is just totally dresser association for me. Don't know anything about this. |

| Mom probably should not have been bred. Those tiny g feet, outsize head, Lack of growth do suggest dwarfism. I would consider a veterinary consult, pituitary dwarfism may. And I stress may be treatable. Again, I do not know what I am talKing about, just giving you thoughts to pursue.

| Yep, looks like a white Husky to me, but I can see why others might confuse her with a Shepherd. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Blanca, the big ears are more characteristic of a shepherd which is probably what is confusing most folks. If I saw her walking down the street I would probably question whether she was Siberian or Shepherd or a mix of the two. My neighbor has a white shepherd who could be mistaken for a husky honestly. If it weren't for the larger size and the way it walks on it's rear legs (classic shepherd gait even though it does not have a roached back) I probably would have asked the owner which breed it was. _________________ |

| For the second poster, Blanca, white husky puppies and white german shepherd puppies will look very similar, in fact the tail will probably be the only thing visible at the puppy stage to tell between husky and gsd. Husky tails will curl close to their back, a gsd's tail typically is straight. Can you post a pic of your puppy standing? And how old is your puppy?
To the first poster, hmmm, Valentine, docking of tails would be done by the breeder, were there other dogs at the breeders? Your puppy size wise, could just be a slow grower, and well, there is time for him to grow more, typical end weight for males is 45-60 pounds. There is a member here, that has a male on the very small end, I believe he weighs around 40 pounds, but was 30-35 pounds past his first birthday, so I want to say that at 25 pounds and 7 months he may just be a slow grower. The pic that was provided isn't hugely helpful, a side view would be, so we can see his leg and body structure better. He does appear to have open growth plates, at the ankle of his front legs, and at 7 months old, he is not at all done growing, or at least he shouldn't be done. So I am leaning towards your pup just being small, but not a dwarf size. I also believe that the breeder is not used to huskies and their tails, and docked them, like they do for dobermans for example. How tall is he? My thoughts, and thank you Amy, is that this pup is part or all corgi, some variance of the breed is born with short tails, or breeders will dock the tails, they are slightly smaller than the husky, but do have similarities, such as the masks, and double coats. Max weight is around 30 pounds. I am leaning towards your pup being all corgi, or a husky x corgi mix. Again a side view pic would be helpful in order to see structure, since huskies and corgies will have different type of structure. |

| Renee, my confusion stems from op statement that parents are full Siberian, mom had shortened tail and several.of the litter mates had short tails as well. |

| Blanca, did you see the parents? She is a pretty large pup for a husky, and it would not surprise me at all if she was a cross gsd x husky, or she could be all husky, her tail says husky, gsd's tails will not curl like that, ever. So I will safely say she is at least half husky, if not all husky. Time will tell, puppies change a whole lot in their first year or so. I do have a registered gsd, and gosh if her coat was more like a husky and not gsd, she easily could look like a husky structure and size wise. Sofie, my gsd is petite for a gsd, size range is not really that much different compared to husky (gsd females range 49-75 pounds, and 22-24 inches tall breed standard vs husky females 35-50 pounds and 20-22 inches tall, of course out of standard is give or take on inches and pounds), so my gsd is around 22-23 inches tall, 75 pounds and is a straight back, smaller feet, and she single tracks like a husky, and has straight hocks, she doesn't have the very pronounced flat hocks like many show line gsd's have. It is a guessing game, especially if you did not get your pup from an AKC papered breeding. My other girl is mostly husky, but I do know she has some gsd in her mix, as well as at least another breed, but is primarily husky. She is actually bigger than my gsd, Miya, my husky mix is 25-27 inches tall and weighs 70 pounds, is underweight, and is much, much longer than my gsd. Your pups size and structure reminds me a lot of Miya when she was a puppy, she was over standard at 5 months old, height and weight of a standard husky. If you have doubts on the breeder, I would do an Embark test, it will tell you what breeds she is, if she isn't pure husky, and it will cover 160 different genetic diseases that could possible show up later in life, so a good test to get, if you perhaps got your pup from a not so reputable breeder. Blanca, if you can get a better side view, especially her head, I will take a better look and see if there is gsd poking out, but I will be honest, the two breeds are very similar, especially when you look at a working line gsd vs a husky, the muzzle is slightly different, and the tail, are probably the 2 most noticeable physical traits that are different between the breeds. Temperament wise, there are more differences when comparing the two breeds.
Amy, no negativity from me, I thanked you for the links, after which I changed my mind on what is mixed with the first puppy. Docked tails, where a puppy is born that way is rare, except in certain breeds, like the corgi, which it is a very short tail. But bob tails in general, which is a born that way thing, is very rare in the dog world, most docked tails seen is done after birth. |

| No negativity Renee...I'm just curious re the apparently natural docking of the tails and possible growth retardation. |

| I'll get into this "discussion" (I haven't had a good argument for a few days)
I don't particularly like that picture since, from the angle, he could simply have had his tail tucked under - though I'll grant the OP's comment that it's just a short tail.
Now, that said, I think we three can agree that either he's *not* really a full sibe or there's a genetic defect that's coming out in his dam and himself. Renee suggest that the breeder isn't being completely truthful (my paraphrasing.) I agree with the suggestion that this "breeder" is less that desirable as a breeder - that bitch shouldn't have been bred in the first place.
Telephone and lost train of thought - I'll end that there.
I will say that the two threads running here can get to be confusing to this old man ... _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Al, that picture angle IS terrible for assessing structure. And we can only trusty the op is being truthful with us. Sometimes I wonder if some college kids are yanking our chain, though, more rationally, I doubt it.
This is curious enough, I hope the op gets back to us.
Now. Back to cleaning, trimming and sorting garlic... |

| My dog is 22 pounds and about 6 months so wouldn't worry too much. They all are different but it looks husky to me. |

| I have read that missing/short/docked tails can happen in bloodlines that are a really limited gene pool. All kinds of funny stuff like that starts happening if there's inbreeding in the line somewhere. I've met a husky whose tail was naturally docked like that at birth, and it hasn't negatively effected their life at all. It's hard to tell because all the instagram pictures of him are from above, but he looks like he might be sporting some traits of dwarfism as well, like others have said. A vet look-over might be good just to make sure his quirks won't cause him any problems. It'd be good to know if there's any sickness that runs in his dam's line, too. He's a cutie, though!
Blanca- my white husky gets mistaken for a shepherd all the time too. I assume it happens even more with the dark eyes and everything. She looks sibe to me, her face is DEFINITELY a husky face- but she's also very large and lanky, and while her tail curls, it's very long and thin- which all kind of seem shepherdy. It's possible she's a mix? |
