Hi everyone! I am new here, and I adopted a 2 year old male husky from a rescue about 3 months ago. We named him Bear and he is very friendly and lovable.. But he did come with some baggage as expected from a lot of rescues. I am working on his leash pulling and basic obidence, but there is one thing that he seems to just have an obsolete obsession with; marking every tree, bush, park bench, blade of grass when I take him for walks.

He has never marked in the house (thank goodness) so it was just such a surprise to see how obsessed he is outside with it. And, yes he was neutered before I adopted him. I have started clicker training with him and bring training treats on walks to distracted him from what he thinks is his job (to show the dog world he was here) it has helped but it also seems to frustrate him when I correct him for lifting his leg. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had to deal with this as well?

We walk between 4 to 8 miles a day, but I would like to start bikejoring with him. But the problem with the marking is that he will not run for more then a few feet and then stop to mark, that won't make a fun bike ride for either of us and could even be dangerous if he suddenly stops to mark I front of a bike.

It may take a while for a dog if he's recently fixed for the urge to mark to go away. Some the urge never goes away. My gsd mix was fixed at 3 years old and is awful still. He attempted to hike his leg 30 times in a mile stretch. It is frustrating. I snap the leash and tell him on by. My white husky was fixed at around 2 years old and his marking stopped a couple weeks after the procedure. You can look into getting a belly band if you don't want him urinating at all on walks. It wraps around him and covers with pressure so he can't see. With biking I would keep him tight to the bike and see how he does at a run. Mine when running have to concentrate too much on keeping up that the marking is a non issue.

Thanks for replying, I don't have papers of when he was actually fixed but I don't think it was very recent so I don't believe that's the case. But his age is estimated between 2 and 4 so he probably got fixed later just as you said with your gsd and just never lost that urge. I'm going to continue with the training and see how that goes, he walks so much nicer when he's not allowed to mark.
