| Hello, my seven month old husky has started getting these bald patches on his body. The problem started around two months back. Over the course of two months, he has got two ivermectin injections. His daily medicine includes one 10 mg ivermectin tablet, one 50 mg zinc supplement tablet(as per one doctor it is Zinc responsive dermatosis) and omega 3 and 6 supplement along with a skin ointment. Have started cephalexin 300 mg tab since yesterday. But the problem is getting worse. Need help.
Thanks

| I'm assuming he has been diagnosed with mange? Sounds like you have also gone to multiple vets. What did each one diagnose? I am guessing from the meds that one thinks it's mange (should have done a skin scrape to verify. They shouldn't prescribe doses of ivermec on a hunch) and the other a zinc deficiency?
I have been having balding issues with my latest addition as well. Have it tracked down to an extreme allergy that I think is causing a yeast imbalance on his skin over time resulting in bald spots and some extreme dandruff and dry skin. I have been rubbing coconut oil into the worst spots and have recently started supplementing zinpro zinc supplement to his food. He is also getting bathed in Trizchlor 4 shampoo. I've had good luck with the shampoo but must do it more often. Thinking every other day to get ahead of his problems. Especially since he is blowing coat right now too which makes the problem look so much worse. _________________ |

| You might need to go to a dermatologist, or skin specialist to get on the right meds. If what he has is Demodectic mange (which I'm assuming since he is getting ivermectin intramuscularly and orally), then the treatment is pretty intense and can last for months. Ivermectin usually is the first course of action, but there may be others that would work better. If a treatment is working, then you should be able to see results in the first week or two. Since you are saying that it is getting worse, I'm not convinced it's demodex. Ask your vet for a referral to a dermatologist if that's the route you want to take.
Like mentioned above, shampoo therapy does wonders for skin conditions, but not mange. So in order for us to be able to better help, we need to know what the doctor diagnosed and what specific treatments have already been preformed (ex. skin scraps, biopsies, bloodworm, etc.). |
