Loosing fur around his eye Empty
PostSubject: Loosing fur around his eye   Loosing fur around his eye EmptyFri Apr 21, 2017 9:14 am

Hi guys, I am new here and wondering if anyone has seen this before?
Busker is 8 years old and a little while ago his nose became really dry and cut, we got a new fence and he kept sticking his nose under it so I put it down to him cutting it off the fence. A few weeks ago he started loosing fur around 1 eye, no where else. When I looked online it said it was common for Huskies to develop a zinc deficiency so I got food with extra vitamins in it. It doesnt seem to be helping. I am trying to get someone to get him to a vet (I have knocked my back out) but until then was just wondering if anyone else has seen this to keep my mind at ease till I get him to a vet. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

It will take a little time for food to make a change if it is indeed a zinc deficiency. How long has he been on the new food? For the most part the skin doesn't look really irritated still. I tend to lean on coconut oil for most things. Even with the deficiency under control if he has managed to fester an infection in the area that will need to be treated. If you are careful and he will let you you might try putting some coconut oil on the area to try and sooth the wounds that are there until you can get him to a vet. Try to discourage him from rubbing at it and don't get the coconut oil in his eye. You can rub some on his nose as well to help heal the skin.

I agree with Jenn on the coconut oil. You will need to go to a vet as soon as you can, you have to give the right amount of zinc, from what I understand too much zinc is almost as bad as not enough. It isn't the end of the world if you have to wait a week or two, but should see a vet as soon as you can. Also like Jenn said it will take a few weeks to see any changes if there is a zinc deficiency. Two thing when you go to the vet.....they need to do a skin scraping to determine ZRD and any other type of skin issues. Another issue that is similar to ZRD is dermatitis lupus (dogs can get 2 types internal and external, external will also show up around the nose getting dry and crusty/scaly and then moves on to other areas of the skin, again a skin scraping would be needed to determine.
