| Subject: HUSKY AGGRESSION? Wed Apr 26, 2017 3:05 pm | |
| Hi everyone, I am new to the forum but hopefully some of you can give me some insight on how to handle my current situation. My dog "GHOST" is 5 months old and we also have an 8 week old black German Shepherd "SHADOW" he seems to being getting aggressive.
1. He has alot of food aggression cannot be touched while eating and if the puppy walks by he growls.
2. if he is laying down and my wife touches him or walks by him he growls at her. One time the shadow went near him and got bit (drew a little blood)
3. he has bitten me once when i gave him a kiss while he was laying down (never did it again though)
4. Lately at night he wants to sleep outside, we have a doggy door and a secure backyard
He is somewhat obedient he knows sit, down, stay. always sits before being fed and wont move until told to do so. When the front door is open he will not bolt and stays put, he has never destroyed anything in the house (has plenty of toys). I take him for a two mile run everyday. When we go to work he stays in the room and goes outside through the doggy door other than that he usually walks around the house, and always plays with the puppy with exception to the previous mentioned occasions.

| 5 month old puppies in general are not aggressive. It sounds more like he is not understanding the puppy since he is a puppy too. That is why most people recommend on not having 2 puppies at the same time. Hand feeding should help in the food issue, but overall he is protecting his food from the puppy. They need to be trained and do separate things so they get equal time. I also assume that you have had the gsd puppy only for a couple of days since it also high recommended not to get a puppy under 8 weeks old. I am also assuming they are both males, so you will have to start planning on getting the older one neutered, again that is recommended around a year - year and a half, but since you already are seeing issues, I would plan on doing it once he is over 8 months. It is slightly better to neuter a husky between 8-12 months, the gsd is recommended over a year, but better to wait until 18-24 months old. You have a very large hill to climb, I am glad you came here to ask, and perhaps someone else will have more positive things to add. Have you taken the husky to any obedience or puppy classes so he can learn how to socialize with other dogs? Welcome to the forum Juan I do hope you get some more feed back than just from me. |

| Thank you for your input, the aggression both food and lying down started prior to having the puppy, he has been socialized and he is also starting the training tomorrow. I really hope it helps, I give them both equal attention and I take ghost on the runs alone as well as feeding them in separate areas. but the growling has become more frequent and only with my wife he has been a complete sweetheart with me. |

| I suspect the mouthing has more to do with teething and possibly lack of using his mind, exercise for huskies needs to be both mind and body, so if the wife isn't working with him, he maybe telling her "hey I want to play" so equal time needs to be wife included, makes sense since you are not having as many issues as she is having. Pups will be in a constant teething stage until around 8 months of age. I also think the classes need to be ongoing thru the first year of life for both huskies and gsds. I have both breeds so I do understand them, and understand how they can be very similar breeds under a year old. I strongly encourage that you take one week and wife takes the next week in taking pup to class and then the other one works with the other puppy at home. I am more than happy to help further if you have more specific questions. I do think a 2 mile run for either pup is far too strenuous on hips and joints under 1 year of age. |

| Thank you for all your advice, I use to walk ghost only half a mile a day but i thought once he got to 5 months it would be okay to run with him how much do you think i should exercise him a day? And i don't know if I should be concerned with both of their weights they seem very skinny but i feed ghost 1 cup (8 oz) three times a day and shadow 1/3 (2.5 oz) three times a day is this to little? |

| I think it's 5 minutes of walking per month of age, so at 5 months you should be walking 25 minutes at a time. You can do that multiple times, but it should be walking. Running is really jarring and hard on joints, and preferably on grass or dirt and not concrete if you can help it. They will act like they are wound for sound and can do more but puppies don't care about their joint health for the long run so it's up to us to do that for them. That's where mental stimulation and regional playing comes in to burn off that excess energy that they may have doing the smaller amounts of controlled walking. The classes should help as you get going on them.
Depends on what you feed if 3 cups is enough. Huskies tend to eat slightly less than the back of the bag suggests. But that is depending on the quality of food and protein levels. _________________ |

| I am currently feeding them Merrick Backcountry Recipe, and that is another thing my husky devours the food I had to purchase a slow feeder because he was eating a cup in about 10-20 seconds, as the the GSD he eats at a decent pace.
thank you i will begin walking him for 25 min a day. |

| I think the food amount is fine with the husky, it is not enough for the gsd, Huskies are medium breeds and gsds are large medium or small large breed, so they should be slightly bigger than the husky. Merrick is an excellent food. Your husky looks to be at a good weight. Now I am going to be straight up honest, altho Merrick is a quality food it may not be suitable for a gsd puppy. I looked but can not find calcium to phospherous ratios for the food. It is very important for large breed puppies to have a ratio of 1.1:1 to 1.3:1, or if %'s 1.2% calcium and around 1% phospherous is ideal. That is why many feed large breed puppy food to get the ideal ratios, I am unsure of Merrick, because it just says puppy, and I am assuming you are feeding puppy food. So assuming the ratios are fine, you can call Merrick and ask btw, I am now going to assume gsd puppy is about 10 pounds he therefore should be fed around 2 cups total a day according to the package. A 1/3 cup a meal is only equal to 1 cup a day. So yes the gsd needs an increase in food. Studies have shown with gsd puppies that floppy ears is a sign of not getting enough nutrients, since he is not teething yet which can also be a reason for floppy ears. So imho, until you know what the C:PH ratios are I would start to slowly increase amount fed to the gsd. |

| I am far from an expert, but I think that you need to try to spend more directed time with your 5-month pup (who is so adorable in that car picture I can't stand it!) I would recommend lots of short intervals of training practice, sit, stay, down, come, settle, etc., etc. If you can do 5-10 minutes of this many times throughout the day I think it would help. It will be enjoyable for him and keep him on his toes remembering that you're in charge, and not be aggressive with you. Your wife should also do this, since the growling is directed at her. |
