Allergy testing - Allergy shots Empty
PostSubject: Allergy shots   Allergy testing - Allergy shots EmptyTue Apr 11, 2017 11:00 pm

I am thinking about getting Kye allergy tested. I'm very certain he has a chicken allergy. I took him off grain first and a little later off chicken and saw him improve. He did a round of prednisone and that helped a lot. At one point he had chewed massive sores in his side's and couldn't breathe. We got it mostly under control, breathing still got loud some days but the itching went away and the sores healed. The other day he accidentally got a quarter size bite of chicken and within 5 minutes he was itching. In 10 all the healed sores were reopened. I am mostly wondering about potential costs of getting him on allergy shots. Has anyone had them done for their pet? Do they break the bank? Did you notice a difference worth the cost? While I know he has chicken issues I would like to find what still had him stuffed up even through the prednisone.

I don't know about pets but allergy shots are, for the most part, not available for food allergies (believe there is a late experimental peanut allergy in the works but nothing else currently.) Avoidance is the only tx. That being said - does he have other environmental allergies - pollens, molds etc? And, does he have asthma? Their IS canine asthma and also, I believe, but not 100% sure, canine inhaled steroids to keep it under control. Take it from me, inhaled steroids are a game changer for asthma.

Hadn't thought about asthma. Would that show up any though when we are out walking? He doesn't have great stamina but does get through the walks well without too harsh of breathing. Shots or meds would be more geared toward the environmental allergy I believe he has. Once he detoxed from the chicken the first time he was doing very well with exception of the stuffy head and harsh breathing. Sneezes a lot. The chicken seems to get him worse with his skin while something else messes with his sinuses. At the height of his allergies we were having horrible reverse sneezing episodes. He would reverse sneeze for around 3 minutes or better nearly 6 times a day. That was when we went on prednisone and it all cleared up. I've known people with asthma but not thought about how it might manifest itself in a dog.

Asthma can give a range of severity in symptoms from mild shortness of breath manifesting as slight exercise int ok intolerance or fatigue  to dramatic inability to breath and anywhere in between.

I will look into it. I wouldn't say he is short on breath, just can't get what is there through his passageways. He can just be laying on the floor in the living room and will start breathing loud, like snoring only he's awake. Doesn't move faster or slower than normal, just gets really loud. A couple times I have had to check to see if we have a bulldog in the house. It's not a deviated septum. He was checked for that. We used to get really horrible runny nose before the prednisone. Brown goo would leak out while he was sleeping. None of that anymore and he was treated for a sinus infection. Poor dog is just kind of a mess. At least he's a happy mess though.

And your happy mess gets along fine with your other dogs! That's a big one from my perspective.

He is getting along well. Keno still gets grumpy about him some but Kenzi is actually attempting to play with him now.
