When to transition from feeding 3x a day to 2x day? Empty

Bacchus was weighed yesterday at 40lbs. In the last couple weeks he has had quite a growth spurt going from about 30 to 40lbs. He is also approximately 6.5 months old now.

Since I brought him home at 10 weeks he has been getting on average 1 cup 3x a day. IN the last couple months I have been using Instinct chicken for all life stages and his stool has been more consistent on this so far vs. the TOTW puppy formula.

Is now the proper time to transition him to meals 2x a day vs. 3x a day? I was thinking just giving him 1.5 cups in the morning and 1.5 cups at night.

You can, I don't think it is a hard and fast rule, as long as they are not always hungry and scarf down their food when you switch to twice a day. I stopped feed 3 x's a day for my gsd at 8 months old. Unknowingly I always fed my husky mix twice, had I known, I would have fed 3 x's a day for her until 8 months as well. I think the 8 months is commonly used, because most dog breeds a fairly close to complete growth at that age, and may only have another growth spurt or two, and that is why most recommend 3 x's a day to cover the growth spurts.

Hey MartianHusky,

I've personally always fed my dog 2 times a day since I got him at 8 weeks. It's what the breeder did raising him up and what he told me what to do when I got him. Never really thought about feeding him 3 times, nor is it really feasible with the shift work that I do.

Echo is VERY food driven and will ALWAYS inhale his food (zero chewing). I actually needed to buy him a slow-feed bowl to curb his intake. He can eat a cup of kibble in like 10 seconds! I tried transitioning him to feeding 3 times a day when he got sick once and there was no change with the scarfing down of his food Rolling Eyes. So for me, it doesn't really make a difference if he eats 2 or 3 times a day...he's just always hungry!

If you're concerned about what MiyasMomma mentioned about the hungry/food scarf than definitely look into getting a slow-feed bowl. It helps my guy immensely and gives some more mental stimulation when eating a meal.

Good luck!
