Ate a Bumble Bee Empty
PostSubject: Ate a Bumble Bee   Ate a Bumble Bee EmptyMon Apr 10, 2017 5:44 pm

Well Jethro ate a big fat fuzzy bumble bee today. It was dead before he swallowed it so I don't believe it sting him, and yes I tried to get it out from his mouth but he gobbled it up fast. He hasn't had any allergic reaction, no swelling. He has however thrown up four times over the last 2 and a half hours (since the incident). He hasn't eaten much, mainly because he's been sleeping most of the day, we took him yesterday on a hike and played in the water for a while, so I expected him to be quiet and lounging about, so that isn't too much of a concern. My husband says he is fine, that you just gotta wait it out, but I'm still wondering at which point should we consider taking him to the vet. He's sipped water, and mainly has just been relaxing outside. Apart from throwing up every half hour or so he's been acting normal, even tried chasing another bee.

I suspect the throwing up had more to do with maybe drinking ground water on the walk yesterday? I'm a bee keeper and Archer loves to snatch my bees out of the air. No ill effects. At least for the dog. Not good for the bees

Interesting, I hadn't thought of that. He was completely normal and fine last night, ate his dinner normally, went to bed and such. Woke up fine, and was going about his day normally until he ate the bee. If it is the ground water I'm slightly more concerned that he may have gotten a parasite, he played in a river, all running water, pretty fast too with the recent rain fall we have had. He ate a bite of rice and a bit of kibble a little while ago, I'll keep an eye on him

My girl Mishka goes after bees, got herself stung in the face once too, she looked horrible. I always worried she'd swallow one and on the way down, the bee stings and gets her throat, swells up, and cuts off her air supply (yeah, my thoughts go to the extreme) but it sounds like you have nothing to worry about since the bee was likely dead, and if not dead and was just quiet, probably already released its stinger into someone/something else.

Update on Jethro: he woke up bright and early at 6am (any tips on getting him to sleep until 7, he used to do so as a pup until recently and we are all going crazy trying to figure out how to get him to sleep in just one more hour) went outside to chase the deer, came in and ate his entire breakfast, I imagine he was fairly hungry after not eating much yesterday, and ever since has been running around the house grabbing toys and being his super crazy energetic self Smile hopefully he's learned not to chase after bees lol

How recently? Mine are up half the night right now. It's due to the full moon coming. there are extra critters out with the extra light so they think they need to be out there too.

Ate a Bumble Bee Empty
PostSubject: Re: Ate a Bumble Bee   Ate a Bumble Bee EmptyTue Apr 11, 2017 11:07 am

It's been going on for two months. We thought we had a solution by allowing him to leave his crate when he wanted. He can unlatch the bottom latch, so we would only latch that one, and when he wanted out super early he'd let himself out and curl up on the couch or in his favorite nap spot. It was working until he started peeing on my floors, hasn't done that since he was a pup, so back in his crate he went for the full night. First night he howled the whole night, second night he went back to sleeping fine until 7am but since then it's been 6am wake up calls, I used to think it was because he had to go to the bathroom, so I'd let him out, but then he wouldn't go back to bed and just howl for an hour anyway, causing no one to get any sleep, we went days ignoring him but after little sleep I gave up and get up at 6, though I'd like to get the extra hour, or at least have him sit quietly in his crate after the potty break

Oh yeah, I remember that now. You have another thread about that. Or at least touched on that. Think it was more directed to the potty issue initially by gravitated to sleeping.

I swear as smart as Huskies are...they will put ANYTHING in their mouth, lol.

How old is your dog? I swear puppies go through this rebel phase around 9 months old, and they have to be retrained.

He's 7 months, and I totally get that rebelling and needing to be retrained, a week ago he decided he no longer wanted to be potty trained, so it's been like having an 8 week old pup again
