Wow it's been a while since I've been on here. Oakleys training has been great. She's potty trained, kennel trained, finally got through her "teenage agnst" and she's an all around great dog now. I could ask for a better 7 month old husky. So my next question is, how do I work in letting her free roam. She isn't crated at night when we sleep. We shut our bedroom door and she sleeps on her bed in there. Then during the day she's in her crate for about 6 hours. She loves her crate but I just eventually want to let her free roam.

About a month back, when she was going through her teen agnst she hated her kennel. So I tried free roaming during the day and I think it was to much at once because she destroyed a lot of stuff.

My thoughts are that she's in her crate for 4 hours then I come home on lunch and let her out. Normally she goes back in for about 2 hours till my fiancé comes home. Maybe should I just leave her out those last few hours? Or are huskys just not meant to free roam? Thoughts?

You can try in short spurts on weekends when you can be in and out. Say, a half hour while you go down the street, come back...assess the results. Gradually building up time.

But, my very first reaction? Why bother. If she's crate trained, she's safe inside. Your stuff is safe inside. My very first girl was notorious in house alone her whole life - so much so that my thinking is, cold day in hell before I ever leave a husky loose in house. I won't even leave my current boy in a room where I can't see him! I started to - he was in the sunroom by himself for 20 minutes. Sleeping. But, for some unknown reason, the pillow expoded

To me, it looks like you have the perfect opportunity to train and see.  
Dogs can get into a world of stuff in 15 minutes or less and some of what they can get into is extremely dangerous for them. I think I'd approach it like this.  
First and important doggy proof (hah, as if!) one room, living room, kitchen, preferably the same room where her crate is now - something you can close off for her.  Then, over the weekend, let's say, leave her in that room and go for a short walk - 5 - 10 minutes.  If she has a favourite toy, you might want to leave that out for her.  Don't just stand outside, she can hear you moving around, chatting - you want to "go away".  Check out the room when you get back ...

I'm trying to accomplish two things here - keep the first couple of "trips away" short enough so that separation anxiety doesn't kick in (this is also the reason for moving away from the house) and, of course, to see how she handles the freedom.  Some dogs accept the freedom without a problem since they "see" the whole house as their den, others can never be trusted.

Realize that your desire for her freedom is *your* desire, if she accepts the freedom to move around, she probably still won't.  She may just go to her crate to doze and wait for you to come home.  Her crate's *her* safe place and if you're not around she'll probably gravitate to it naturally.  She may find that your couch is a more comfortable place to nap but don't be surprised to find that she does nothing ...

Au contraire if there is any indication that she's going to get into things, remember that her crate is the safest place for her to be when she isn't attended.

Of course, the ultimate tool to see what she's doing while you're not there is one of the cameras that you can monitor on your phone or computer at work.  The ones on the link run from inexpensive at US$38 to pricey US$379.  I believe that others here use camera and may be nice and comment.

Two of mine are free roam all the time. They didn't start that way but we worked up to it. I started just letting her be in the house alone while I mowed the yard or worked in the garden. Before doing this I dog proofed the room she was in so there wasn't really much of anything for her to bother. As my confidence went up I would leave little stuff out that I didn't car about like an old taco bell cup or something. Something that if she destroyed it wouldn't matter but something that if she was going to be nosy and destroy things that would be what she might go for. Each dog seems to have the things they like the most. For kenzi it was paper. For keno it was wires.

Thanks for all the good information. This weekend we started with letting her free roam while we did some yard work. She did great. We're going to keep doing that for a few weeks. Then when I get home on my lunch break I'm going to leave her out because she will only be alone an hour and a half till my fiance gets home. Thanks for all the great advice. I love this forum.
