So, due to Roxy's negative response to being back on the Interceptor, I have been looking for an alternative and came across Revolution. Wasn't sure if anyone has had any experience with it, but it seems to be an all-in-one (heartworm, flea, tick, mites) and it's topical, and it seems to have a very low occurrence of side effects. Plus it would be cheaper to get this product than to purchase a separate heartworm pill and topical flea/tick treatment.

Any thoughts from anyone who has used this?

I know there was a topic started, maybe on fleas and ticks, that included info on Revolution. Have you tried searching for this topic yet?

Don't use Revolution.... I need to find the topic though. Can't remember why, I just remember it's not recommended.

I had always had Mya (we didn't have Kody yet) on Heartgard and Frontline or Advantix when a co-worker suggested revolution. When I mentioned it to the vet he told me that revolution wasn't recommended for dogs because it doesn't really work for all of them. That it's awesome for cats, but that for many dogs it wasn't great. If I recall from a previous thread I think a few people on here use it and it works just fine, but the majority were against it. I followed my vets instructions and stuck to what I was using.

We use Revolution - our vet gave us the Rx to treat his lice and now we keep him on it for heartworms, and everything else.

I believe the problem with Revolution is that it does not repel ticks. I know that is the case for the Revolution for cats. Maybe you could check their website to see if that is true for the dog product.

To me, that's worth it. And once the weather gets warmer and we start to hike in the woods, I'm putting Val's flea/tick recipe together for protection

Excellent point! The heartworm pill administered monthly is a very minor inconvenience and expense when compared to getting heartworms. We just give our's the Heartguard tab on the same day as the flea and tick medicine every month.

My comments on Revolutions drawbacks have already been linked to and quoted here so I won't repeat all that.

However I would like to point out that most vets and vet techs will tell you that Revolution takes care of mites BUT what they don't tell you is that it only takes care of mites in cats, NOT dogs. I had to do a lot of research on my own to find this out. Sometimes vets and vet techs can be so useless...but I digress.

I don't recommend Revolution, not only did my dogs get fleas while on Revolution (before I adopted them) but there have been MANY documented cases of dogs contracting heartworm while on Revolution. Is it really worth the risk to you?

Normally I recommend a monthly pill for HW prevention, something like Heartgard, Iverhart, Interceptor, etc.

But since you seem to be looking for an "all-in-one" I recently learned of a new product available now called Trifexis.

Trifexis uses spinosad and milbemycin oxime. Basically, it's like a combination of Comfortis and Interceptor combined into one monthly pill. Since this is a new product I have not heard any user comments nor have I tried it on my own dogs. But I am familiar with the active ingredients and I have used Interceptor on my own dogs and I know people who have used Comfortis. Both are very effective and because it is in pill form you don't have to worry about some of the product not making it where it's supposed to be like the issue with Revolution being topical and not fully absorbing. If it makes any difference to you, if it were not for the fact that I use natural flea control measures, I would totally feel comfortable using Trifexis on my dogs and I have no qualms about recommending it to others based on what I see so far.

Spinosad is a flea treatment product (found in Comfortis). I believe spinosad only kills adult fleas though so that may or may not be what you are looking for. But Spinosad does seem to be very effective so it might make a good choice for does who do not suffer from FAD (flea allergy dermatitis).

Milbemycin Oxime kills heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, and whipworm (found in Interceptor). I've used Interceptor on my dogs and while on it they have always tested negative for HW and intestinal parasites. Plain and simple, it works.

So basically, if you want an all-in-one flea/HW/intestinal parasite control, I would not even consider Revolution but I would strongly recommend asking your vet about a prescription for Trifexis. Just be aware that since this is a new product, some vets might not be aware of it yet.

I did look into the Trifexis, as my vet's express clinic has started carrying it, but I am worried that if Roxy seems to get sick from the Interceptor that this might not be for her, as well as I don't see anything saying it protects against tickets.

Guess I'll just need to stick with separate treatments... all in one would be nice but not if it doesn't provide all the coverage we need...

Oh, I'm sorry! I completely forgot she did not do well on Interceptor! Well then I wouldn't bother with Trifexis. I would just try separate flea/tick and HW prevention then. Sorry about that.
