So I work in a pet store and had noticed for a while some raw foods made for dogs. A few brands were Primal, Stella and Chewy's, and Nature's Variety. Are they even considered raw meals? Are they safe? What are your thoughts and opinions on these foods?

I'm not going to comment on whether they are 'raw' food or not, I don't do raw. But you might want to check my thread on recalled pet foods. Stella and Chewys had a mandated recall on Jul 3 15 and a voluntary recall on Dec 12 15 Natures Variety had a recall on Jul 25 2015 Primal had one batch of cat food recalled on Mar 13, 2015 (not on my list, I only track dog food recalls) Are they safe? I'm guessing that would be arguable. Obviously since you're dealing with a product that isn't cooked there is always the possibility of 'something slipping past'. Even after my comments above, I must emphasize that I don't feed raw so take anything I have to say with a grain of salt. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford .

Me personally I am leery of these foods because of the recalls. They are raw, not sure if they are freeze dried, or how it is done with them, but they are a complete meal. people who are strict on raw, as in prey model will tend to lean towards them. I prefer items like The honest kitchen, Grandma Lucy's or Sojo's, they too are raw, believe these are dehydrated or freeze dried too, but are more like kibble, where vegies and fruits are used with meats. I do know that Orijen and Nutrisca make a raw that is similar to the 3 you mentioned, I have tried the Nutrisca and my girls liked it,, did well on it, just took forever to rehydrate, and well the girls didn't care, so ok, hahaha. As far as any raw is concerned, in reality if your dog is healthy and the recall is over salmonella, I would be more concerned about me vs my dogs. Dogs have a shorter digestion tract compared to humans, so a healthy dog, the salmonella would just go thru the system without issue pretty quickly, whereas us humans we would get sick. Overall, if you can afford it, feeding raw is imho the best way to feed. I feed kibble in the morning and a mix of raw and kibble in the evening, and my girls do great on it. If I had to choose between the 3 you mentioned I would pick the Nature's Variety. Hoped that helped you out some.

I would love to feed raw to Mika. She had been given some samples of raw from Nature's Variety from a co-worker and she loved it. Her stomach had no problems handling the beef variety at all. She is not really too much into ham and chicken bothers her alot. She can't have duck either. I did notice that they have a rabbit formula. Maybe I will give that a shot too after some time. She has been doing much better with the smaller portions of food. Her stool has firmed up a bit more. She has lost interest in her earthborn though. We are going to give TOTW a try once she is on her last of her current food.
