I'm not real sure how to describe this but occasionally (maybe 3 times in the past month and a half) my husky's left ear will sort of get stuck in a weird position (sort of pointing to his left side instead of up like the other ear) it only lasts for a minute or two at most, and he will walk around shaking his head as if he can feel it and is trying to get it to go back where it normally rests, also he can still move it around but it will return to the awkward position until the whole thing is passed. I don't think it's neurological as he doesn't exhibit any sort of symptoms that would imply a seizure or anything (his eyes are fine and face are fine, no twitching of any kind anywhere and he is completely normal outside of trying to shake his head to fix it so he's aware of it). Seems like it may be muscle cramp related or something? I don't know. I will obviously check in with the vet and see what they say but I was wondering if anyone on here has seen similar things in their dogs.

Pointing down like the ear is flopping like a hound's would? Or trying to fold backwards such as when they get their ear stuck inside out? Thin or weak tissue or a muscle spasm seem more likely but it's not something I've really heard of much. I know young dogs or puppies sometimes have their ears flop up until they are more fully developed and the cartilage in the ear strengthens.

I edited the post to be more clear. Think of it if you're looking at the dog in the face, ears up and pointing towards you, the left one will sort of fall to the left side (still pointing forward or whichever direction he movies it, just sort of slumped over as they would be in a relaxed state when he's being lazy). Muscle spasm makes a lot of sense. It's almost as if it's cramped, but he doesn't show any pain from it at all, when it just happened before posting this I touched his ear and moved it around and he did not respond negatively at all.

It is possible that there might be something in the ear. Dirt or a bug or something that is bothering him and the ear sag isn't necessarily something that is happening to the ear but more of a response to something tickling or irritating the inside of it. Kinda like what most animals would do if a mosquito was buzzing around their ear. I would give a check inside the ear and look for anything like dirt or tick. A simple cleaning might make it stop.

I'm thinking the same thing...something may be in the ear. My last husky Malukhai and my current lil girl Mishka both have/had an awful habit of shoving their heads into bushes and stuff ,and some, like juniper, would drop tiny little prickly pieces in their ears and the look you describe is exactly how it was/is for them. Neither one would act bothered by it if I rubbed the ear or something either. This is also the time of the year for fox tails and you really don't want one of those to be down inside the ears.

I know exactly what you are talking about. My boy Zeev has the same problem too .. we started noticing it when he was about 6 months old .. Happens about 1 or 2 times a month , it gets fixed ( back in to position ) by itself in couple of minutes or so . Some times we massage his back of the ear to help out . It works sometime , but sometimes it doesn't .

he is 17 months now , and started having seizures . he is now on Keppra 750mg XR twice a day ..Vet said it is idiopathic epilepsy after doing a couple of tests. Not sure if both are related , we mentioned it to the vet , but they think it is just a muscle spasm , nothing to do with his seizures ..

Sorry to hear about your pup Indu, Jimmy Artic_wind (he posted up a few spots from you on this thread) has experience, and there are some others that have had experience with epilepsy. You may want to search the forum for threads on it. Does your breeder know about Zeev's epilepsy? I would definitely inform your breeder, they need to know. Zeev is so young to be experiencing epilepsy, typically it shows up after 2 years of age. You might want to start a new thread, that way Jmiiy could see it and at least respond, he is a pretty active member, where as some of the others are not. best of luck to you and Zeev.

Indu, I'm so sorry Zeev has developed seizures, I know how it is and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy...I personally went through it 3 times. Best advice I can give you without this post being pages long would be as follows...

1. Make sure you have his blood levels monitored at the time frame your vet set up, the meds in his system need to be kept at a level that reduces/eliminates break through seizures. It's pretty important.

2. Keep a diary of his seizures, noting day, time, duration and severity, and anything unusual you can think of either in the seizure itself, or anything that happened in a short time frame leading up to his seizure. You are wanting to see if you can come up with a pattern, which would help you to reduce or eliminate his seizures. An example, my last boy, Malukhai, would seizure within a week of a time change, in the 3 years he had them, and actually passed away a few days after the Spring adjustment of our time. And although all dates were always random, December 21st was the only common day he seizured in the 3 years, always his worst seizure as well. This day is Winter Soltice as well, not sure how/if this played into it at all but interesting nonetheless.

3. Should he go into a seizure, you don't want your hand/fingers anywhere near his mouth. During a seizure, their teeth lock down. I've read the swallowing the tongue thing is a myth, so no worries there and no need to put your fingers in his mouth. You do however want to be close by so you can help prevent him hurting himself.

4. Read the various threads in here on seizures, I believe there is a FB page devoted to dogs who seizure with lots of good information. A member here, who is not so active anymore but has posted really good information, is "blueeyedghost" and she has mentioned the name of that FB page in her posts as well as the newest drug combinations and also supplement type things, like milk thistle, that are given to dogs on meds to help combat any damage to liver, kidneys, from the meds themselves. It's worth the search in my opinion. Lot of good information on the web as well, and even a few husky and/or malamute breeders have devoted a page on their site to seizures, one I particularly found interesting was by a husky breeder who is also a brain surgeon MD.

5. Renee mentioned it, so I will reiterate it. If you haven't informed your breeder already, you should do so. He/she needs to know.
