| So I recently got a new husky puppy, her name is Kiba and she can be a sweetheart but is having issues with her crate. First husky for me but I've done the training thing with service dog pups and I currently have another dog at home that is really well crate trained. My issue is this. She goes into the crate perfectly willingly and will even sleep in it during the day if the door is open. She cries for a little bit when shut in during the day when I am gone but settles down nicely. Overnight I try to get her good and tired so she will go to sleep right away. She sleeps well but wakes up after about 6 hrs and almost immediately starts her very loud, very high pitched husky cry/howl. It's to the point where it's all I can do to wait for a brief second gap to enter the room cuz she doesn't stop for more than that. We had tried her in our bedroom and that seemed worse so now she is in a downstairs empty office I use for the dogs with the other dog there in her own crate and a radio for company. After she is briefly quiet I enter the room let her out and we go potty. I don't speak except her command to go when outside and then after she is done we go right back in and at this point will enter her crate but then turns around and comes charging back out at me when I try to shut the door. She is also still whining/crying after I let her out and while we are outside. I make sure she has a quick drink before going back to bed so I know she's not thirsty. But after I get her back into her crate she will start up her cry/scream for well over an hour before settling down some and even then she only settles for maybe 30 min and then right back at it. She has never had an accident in her crate so I don't feel like that is the issue, I just feel like she is panicking in it a bit for the second half of the night. Then we have a setback in the morning where she doesn't want to stay in her crate to eat her breakfast, she keeps eating a bite and then coming out to check on me before going back in. Lunch and dinner in her crate go fine with me able to leave the room and she still finishes. She seems to be more anxious if shut in her crate and she knows people are there than if she is off by herself too. She is 8 weeks old today and haven't even had her a week quite yet. I guess I mainly just need some reassurance that hopefully this will pass and I just need to give it time or if I need to try something different. Both my husband and I work full time and he is getting grumpy with sleep interruptions. first time posting so will see if the picture works. Also I realize this got sort of long and rambly (lack of sleep talking some) and yes we try to give her lots of playtime during the day. I come home at lunch and my husband is usually home mid afternoon. |

| Also every time I let her out of her kennel either the blanket or her stuffed toys is damp or wet but never smells like pee. Has anyone ever noticed a younger puppy sucking on her toys/blankets that much and should I be concerned about it? Also the very top of her tail is often wet after being in her kennel like she sucks on that too. Her feet are never wet though so again I don't think it's pee. Any ideas? |

| She's either sucking/chewing on her toys and her blanket or she peed. Sometimes puppy pee (since they drink a lot of water) is quite clear and doesn't have much smell or any smell at all. My puppy did both so to be safe, we bathed her and washed her toys almost daily X___X If she is 8 weeks old, it means she can probably only hold her pee for 1 1/1 to 2 hours at the most. The rule of thumb is whoever many months old a puppy is, that's how many hours they can hold their bladders. Anytime she wakes up during the night, she'll probably need to pee and she won't be able to hold it for long. When we first got Mochi, she was 6 weeks old. My bf and me both worked the same schedule. 10AM to 2PM then 4PM to 10PM. Not a great schedule for a puppy, but it was do-able. We took her out to use the restroom several times during our 2 hour lunch break and she used the bathroom around 4 times in 2 hours. She usually slept most of our dinner shift and she would pee on her potty pad if she woke up while we were gone. If she peed a lot, potty pad was pretty much useless and we had to bathe her almost every night.
If she's going to continue to stay where your other dogs are staying, I would suggest to leave the crate there and continue training her there. If she's going to stay in your room, then leave the crate in your room. If you keep moving it around, she'll have a hard time to get used to where her place in the house is supposed to be. When I was crate training mine, we had her in our room, but not where she could see us. Her crate was at the foot of our bed. It was much easier to "ignore" her whining. We read that you shouldn't even look at them when they're whining or they'll know their whining gets your attention. You have to have a lot of patience. I think because every time she stops whining for just a minute or so and you let her out, she knows that her whining makes you let her out. I suggest that you try to wait it out until she stop whining/howling for several minutes. Huskies are a lot of work but definitely worth it. Hope whatever I said can help you out some! |

| Heather, at 8 weeks old puppy pees tend to be diluted, it may be she is peeing in her crate. 8 weeks old she can only hold it for 2-3 hours max. It took both my gsd and husky around the 5-6 month old range to actually hold it thru the night, about 8 hours. She is more than likely peeing in her crate. The other issue I had with my gsd, she rarely slept for more than 6 hours at a time. She is still that way, but unlike a husky, Sofie has been very trustworthy as to not destroy anything, my gsd is 13 months old. What type of activities are you doing before bed time? My two girls are very different in the bedtime routine, Miya my husky had to be near us, so she settled down for 8-10 hours at around 8 months old as long as she was with us. Sofie also needs to be near us, however, she has always been the type who will not sleep more than 6 hours. Sleep deprivation happens, I am sorry to say that. It is hard to say at 8 weeks old what your girl will be like at say 6 months old, because she is super young, I would do some playing and training a half hour before bed, tire her body and mind. I would also teach shhhh bed time, even my gsd will be quiet, even tho she has had enough sleep after 6 hours. Sadly this is probably gonna upset you, but at 8 weeks old she needs to be taken out every 2 hours to relieve herself, asking her to go more than 3 hours and she will mess in her crate, holding pee is much more difficult for puppies, and it is recommended they can hold it 1 hour per month of age, so at 8 weeks=2 months she can hold it 2 hours, 3 months 3 hours, and so on. I did not get more than 8 hours of sleep until my gsd was 5-6 months old, and during the day she still went out to pee on average every few hours at 5-6 months old. I still experienced house accidents until 5 months old. |

| Overnight her crate stays dry at least from when she goes to bed ~10 pm until she wakes up crying at 4 am. It's the second she goes back into her crate and we lock the door she starts to cry/scream. I would love to be able to wait for her to be quiet for longer but she hardly stops at all for me to be able to do that. I have listened to her "screaming" for almost an hour with no pause for me to go let her out. Would making a startling noise help or is that still attention of some sort that could be seen as "I cry and it gets their attention". I guess I just struggle with the second part of the night knowing that she doesn't have to go and she doesn't really stop crying at all until I get up at 6:30. Although I will say last night was better. I heard just a few whimpers at 4 am so I went down and she was relaxed laying in her crate awake so we went potty but then we didn't want to go back in, and then started crying after we finally did go back in. I work 8-5 with a lunch break at 12:30 when I go home and we run like crazy until it is time for me to leave again, my husband works similar hours but is usually home 3:30 -4pm and lets her out then. He also makes it home in the morning sometimes to let her out and run and play. Then we go out and run in the backyard several times in the evening and maybe a hour or so before work too. She has only had 1 vaccine that can't be boostered until next week so no walks around town for us yet. I just don't want the crying/not liking our crate to turn into separation anxiety, but I know I have to give it time still. |

| She's still young so she may whine endlessly until she gets what she wants. You really do just have to let her cry it out. Sometimes it takes quite a while for her to give up. Like Renee said, it will probably be like this until she's 6 months old. My dog didn't particularly love her crate until recently, but she always knew it was her safe place and it was the one place in the house that was uniquely and completely her own. She eats in there, she relaxes in there, she chews on her toys in there. She still gets upset when she knows I'm home but she's in the bedroom and I'm in the kitchen. She howls once or twice and then gives up and just waits by the room until I come back in. I guess she does have separation anxiety to a degree, but aren't huskies like that by nature? They're pack dogs and they always want to be with their pack, whether their pack is dogs or humans. |

| We have always had the whining problem. My husband is a plush over, so if they didn't want to be in the crate, a couple whines and he's let them out... Luka finally is ok with relaxing in there. Mia will go in when she's scared and then escape when she's bored. Our experience was the whining might get worse before it gets better, but it's worth it in the end. Just keep in mind they're like babies-the nightly interruptions are to be expected and they may last a few months. Like Renee and Gwen said, it took Luka until he was around 6 months before he could go from 11pm to 6 am without waking up and crying. Just keep up with it (and don't be like my husband!) and she will eventually get better with time! |

| Thanks everyone. She is getting better. Now she is quieting down for longer so then I let her out. She just starts crying after she is out and with us, which may just be her saying "I'm so happy to see you and glad you came back!" I know it will take time but the reassurance always helps The last puppy I crate trained was a lab that took to it in like a day and a half and never looked back. So this is a wake up call compared to that. Lol |

| Huskies want to be with their people, it's just the nature of the breed. All puppies are different. I have read that puppies left asleep, will go 6-8 hours without having to go out and pee, I never wanted t0 clean the crate to test the theory. lol......does the pup have anything in the crate to chew on or occupy herself? so she may whine but then settle on a toy? I got Sofie the blue one, and as a gsd she has a much larger bite force than a husky, and this is the only teething toy she did not destroy and she still has it, and 0 damage, even tho I bought it for her as a puppy I did buy the medium one so it was too big for her to swallow, and unlike other toys she hasn't been able to bite off any of it. Of course you have to observe you puppy to see how destructive she is, I can't imagine she could tear off anything on this bone, so it should be safe to leave with her while she is crated and alone.

| Yeah she has a Kong and a nylabone for puppies in there. The thing is she doesn't really care to chew on either one. She is only interested in the Kong as long as there is a treat in it for her. She loves plush or rope toys and so far just sort of mouths them without trying to rip everything off. I have left one of those in her crate with her if I'm not gone long and I come home and it is wet from her sucking on it. That jolly bone looks neat though may look into that one. |

| Overnight is going much better. We finally sort of gave up on the potty break during the night thing and she sleeps just about all the way through. I can sometimes hear her crying maybe 30 minutes before my alarm goes off. We are also getting better at not crying the minute the door gets shut on us. I still notice during the day mostly that her blanket ends up being quite wet from drool. I have ruled out the possibility of it being pee. I use only white blankets in there. The drool I think is an anxiety thing of being alone despite our other dog in a kennel near her and a radio on and food toys to play with. Potty training is a bit of hit or miss some days. (I think my husband doesn't always catch her subtle cues) I have gotten to the point where I can ask if she needs to go out and she will run to the door. I wish she would whine or something though, but we whine about anything else instead though. |

| Heather, have you tried cow ears? They last a solid hour with both of my girls at Kiba's age, and after watching them a few times, I knew for them they were safe to leave alone with, again every dog is different so you would have to observe, and other idea is elk or moose split antlers, they are way softer than deer, safer than bones (I feed raw bones but only when I am around) and they will work on them a long time. The potty thing when you are home, I would tether her to me, that way you can pic up on her cues better, and of course praise and reward when she goes outside. Nice update, glad things are getting better |

| Maybe I should make my husband use a tether! We have very rare accidents when I am watching her like maybe one every few days if I get distracted. But more often when my husband watches her. |
