| Dear husky friends. Soon my adorable female husky is going to turn her 9 months. So far i've been keeping her 3 meals per day schedule but i feel that 9 months old is semi-adult and i should limit her daily meals to 2 instead of 3.
My questions now are: 1. Are 2 meals per day ok? 2. What is the total daily amount of dry food i should feed her? Pedigree suggests 190gr per day so that means 95gr for each meal. Is that fine? 3. What's the maximum weight i should expect for a female husky? is there a chart with an expected weight per month/year?
Her daily activity is normal i guess, sometimes she runs and sometimes she rests surprisingly under the sun and not in the shadow and when im back home we play together with the toys i got for her.
Thank you! |

| 2 meals a day is fine at this age. Female huskies typically weigh between 35-55 pounds. Most I would say in the 45 pound range, it depends on how large the parents were. I hate asking, but do you live in the US? pedigree is not the best food out there for a husky, if your girl is doing well then, it doesn't really matter, is that 190 grams of kibble you are feeding a day? Which flavor are you feeding? It may help in knowing if 190 grams would be correct. |

| hey thank you for the reply. Iam in Greece, humm ok i'll check and see for other brands... i thought pedigree was a good one... it sure is expensive! She seem to like it so far... there are various flavours , i tend to not fix to only one so that she doesnt get bored. |

| Pedigree isn't very expensive (at least here in the US), and it isn't the best option, especially for huskies. Pedigree and some other brands tend to use a lot of grains. This includes whole grain corn, whole grain wheat, corn meal, among any other grains, and then toss in some animal by-products which could be things like bone meal (ground up bone), feather meal (ground up feathers), or just low grade meat, lots of fat, other body parts that aren't used for human food (beaks, chicken legs, organs). Basically, a byproduct is anything that they couldn't sell for human consumption ground up and used in some other way.
Dogs in general aren't really built to live off a grain diet. And animal by-products are not exactly the best quality food for nutrients.
If you take a look at your pedigree bag, you'll likely see a lot of grains and by-products.
Don't get me wrong, dogs can do just fine on this. These types of pet food tend to be far cheaper (grains and byproducts are cheap after all), so most pet owners use the stuff. If your pet is healthy and fit, they are probably just fine. But many people see improvements in their pets with a better diet. More energy, better health, better looking coat, etc.
Think of it like your own diet. You could live off mountain dew, potato chips, and fast food burgers, but you'd probably gain a lot of weight, feel like crud, and lack the energy to do anything. The same goes for our pets.
A lot of people here like Taste of the Wild. But there are other good brands also (even some store based generics), some of which are a little cheaper, and some more expensive (although all will likely be more expensive than Pedigree). You want to look for things that are free of grains and have less by-products. Taste of the wild for instance uses real meat, fruits, and vegetables along with some meal-based fillers (it's hard to get completely away from this stuff unless you prepare your own pet food). Many of these brands also have a wide selection of flavors to choose from, so a rotation is still possible.
Again, if your dog is healthy, active, happy, and the correct weight. Their current food may be working out just fine. |

| My main concern on the food you feed was the amount, 190 grams equals about 1 cup of food a day, and typically that is not quite enough food. Does your dog finish all of the food every day or leaves some behind? Or just the opposite and seems hungry all of the time? I am not sure of what is available in Greece, Farmina I believe is available, and I do know a high quality food. Can you tell us what foods are available to you so we can help on amount and which brands may be more suitable for your pup? As Dave mentioned above, grains are hard on huskies, they tend not to do well with grains (may be considered cereals in Greece). Research has found that huskies and other northern breeds lack a gene that processes grains properly, so that is why most huskies do not do well on a grain/cereal based kibble. |

| Very informative! Thank you so much. I will do my homework and check out which pet food products are availavle on the market over here. Some pet shops offer dry food which is produced by them (?) maybe... but i think its lower quality than Pedigree. 3Kgr of Pedigree costs around 6euro ($7?) To be completely honest i don't measure the daily doses, i try to put as much as possible on her plate and let her decide how much she wants to eat... Bad practice? |

| Free feeding or lack of scheduled feeding can create picky eaters. Keeping in mind canines are opportunistic feeders, if the opportunity is always there the need to feed drops significantly. Which makes it increasingly hard to monitor daily health. The earliest warning sign of things amiss internally with your dog will be going off their food. |
