Barking at nervous dogs Empty
PostSubject: Barking at nervous dogs    Barking at nervous dogs EmptyFri Sep 23, 2016 7:57 am

Ragnarok has started a bad habit and I was hoping someone would have a suggestion of what to try.

He has started barking at nervous dogs at the dog park. I do tell him "no" and take him away. He settles down eventually but still, I don't want him to get bad habits.

I know he also barks when he wants to play with a dog but this seems different (still not aggressive but more annoying )

I have nothing really of substance to help you but Gabby does similar antics. She picks on the nervous dogs. Except her way of doing it is biting them in the butt and running away. This really pisses of the owners. I just remove her from the dog and redirect her into playing with me over picking on the dog which works for that dog in that exact moment but that is it. She still does it all the time and I have not found a good way to resolve it.

I am finding that with Kairo, simply removing a small distance does NOT work. I have to physically end any and all fun/progress. For instance, I have been trying to get her to quit "creeping" over the gate (staring for hours at me/the cat). I have tried everything from physically moving her back, to moving the gate further away. No matter what she will either find a way to still be able to see what she wants to (limited walls to hold a gate up) or just run away when I make a move towards her (but not if she sees me looking at her).

This has filtered into walks, where she is still pulling though she immediately responds to me planting my feet. She pulls, I plant my feet, she slackens/sits, I give her the free command, and she immediately goes back to pulling.

The only thing that seems to get through her head is when ALL things end when she does something I do not want.

For the baby gate creeping, I have started crating her for a couple minutes at a time.

For the walk, the moment she pulls I turn right around and march back to the apartment without allowing her to stop for anything. If she hasn't done her business she will go back out a few minutes later. I am getting quicker results on this front already.

My suggestion is to end the dog park fun the moment she starts barking at another dog. Carry the lead in your hand. When she starts barking, calmly walk up, put the leash on, and walk her back to your car. You don't necessarily have to leave, but treat it like "crate time" until she calms down. No less than 5 minutes in the car even if she's calm. I would say that after the second offense in one day, drive home. She will quickly learn that poor manners will end the trip.
