Luka got neutered yesterday. Poor little guy is milking it for all its worth. He's doing pretty good. If only had female dogs, and the last time we had a dog spayed was when I was real little, so I don't really remember it well.. But I think he's being a trooper! Just had two quick questions for y'all: 1. My husband had them do a laser incision and closing, which I'm not familiar with. He said the vet said its a more secure closure and less of a problem with reopening on dogs that are seriously dead set on licking, even with the cones. How have you guys found them to actually be? Have you guys noticed they heal faster, less infected, etc? 2. Lukas on antibiotics and has started having death farts... Normal solid poops but DEAR LORD THE STENCH. I think that's normal for dogs when they're on antibiotics?

| I got my girl spayed at almost 1 year old right after she finished her first heat cycle I also opted for the laser incision and closing and while she was not active at all the first day and a half, she was herself again by the 3rd day and the incision was almost fully healed already! She never licked her incision and I didn't have to buy a cone. She just wanted to lay down and cuddle with mommy and daddy until she felt better. No infections and the scar is barely noticeable. Of course, it differs from dog to dog and it's probably different for girls and boys as well. I don't remember her being on antibiotics but she probably was? She used to fart a lot anyway and they always smelled bad so I'm not much help on the second question, sorry! She was on a dog food with sweet potato at the time and I find her poop and farts smelled worse when she ate anything with sweet potato.
Hope your baby has a speedy recovery!! |

So far it's day 2 and he's trying to act like normal. He tries to lick the incision when we're not looking, so we put the cone on him when he's unsupervised... He gets the innertube looking thing when we're around. He's mostly just sleeping through the day-he's used to having free reign of the first floor when we're not home, and now he's confined to the office. So as soon as we get home he goes nuts. Which I guess is a good sign that he's not feeling completely aweful?

I know the girls don't do as good as the boys after the surgery, atleast in my experience. Kohdi slept thru the day I picked him up, and part of the next day and then it was like he never even had surgery. Mishka on the other hand, although I think she did quite well, if she moved too fast, she would "squeak" for I'd say about 3 days...then it too was like she never had surgery. The farting...yeah, antibiotics. I think Luka will do great

Dev, I feel for you. Sofie had her spay on Thursday (last week), don't believe she had the laser. She had almost a 6 inch incision, yikes! She had diarrhea the day after, but really thought it was from the anesthesia an d pain meds. She did not get any antibiotics, and only 3 days worth of the pain meds which were diluted (called for twice a day to give but my vet said once a day). Friday she moped around, and by Saturday she was ready to play, and man it was difficult to keep Miya and Sofie calm, hahaha. Pain meds were done Sunday night, and Monday I did allow her to play a little, no jumping and only inside. Yesterday I allowed chasing outside but no ground touching , same with today. I was told by vet 0 exercise for 10 - 14 days, yea right, hahahaha. Her incision is almost completely healed, the ends are still noticeable but the mid section looks like a scar and no visible stitches. I will say I gave her 1 teaspoon of coconut oil every other day starting Saturday, and I swear that is why it is healing so fast. It is slightly dark pink in the area, compared to red the day of and 2 days after, but I mean it looks great. I did use some yogurt on the days she had to take her meds, so maybe that is why she hasn't had anymore poop issues. Did they give you any probiotics? If not maybe add in some greek yogurt and see if that helps. And this is the most odd thing, I have no idea where they did the intravenous on her, Luka you can see his bandage on his arm, and I know a spay is more intricate than a neuter, so where did they hook that all up on her? Didn't use a cone, just told her to leave it if I caught her starting to lick the area, and must be she listened, hahahaha. Good luck, sorry I took up a rant on your thread. BTW, Dev one more post and you can start entering HOTM's YAY!

Al, not to hijack Dev's post but, it's hard for Miya to hide when she is pretty much on my lap or under my feet all day, lol. I have one pic of her, I can post it, it's not a great quality pic, but in honor of having entries in a short month I'll oblige.

Miya my vet recently told me about the wonders of coconut oil! Wish I knew about it sooner, I would have given my Mochi some when she was spayed too

Dev, I cook up about 3 ounces of turkey, chicken, lean hamburger (boil with some water), let it cool just a tad I scoop up the teaspoon of coconut oil and plop it on the kibble and then mix the water and meat into it, the heat melts it and coats the kibble, let it cool to warm, not hot and feed. You can also see if he will lick it off a spoon, both of my girls love the taste of coconut oil. Also once you see no visible stitches you can rub it in, when Sofie cut her paw pad, I skipped the vet, cleaned it up and slathered the coconut oil on it, I try and have her relax for a half hour or so, to make sure she didn't lick it off, obviously her licking it off isn't gonna hurt her, like I was afraid neosporin would, but I did want the oil to do it's magic. She had 2 paw pad cuts, and the deep one healed in about a week and a half, the second one less than a week. I swear by the oil

I mixed it with my dogs food or I fry eggs with it for her. For her birthday I used it for the oil in her cake. My vet told me it helps with dry skin and healing process.

Gwen, I agree with your vet Miya had a spot on her hip, and the fur wasn't right and could see her pink skin, in about 2 weeks time it is almost back to healthy fur.

I wish I heard about the coconut oil earlier! I would have used it to grow her hair back faster when she was a puppy after the sores all healed.
