Hi there! I've lurked on these forums a bit and posted about our first husky a few months ago. He's really settled down and he'd doing fantastically, after months of training. But he just has so much energy all day.... two daily exercise sessions + play sessions with us just weren't enough. He'd get frustrated. We have a friend who wanted to find their husky a new home - she's an only dog and they couldn't keep up with her exercise or social demands. We trialed her at our house and... success! The two dogs are attached at the hip and even a single 30-60 min walk per day is enough most days as they exercise and entertain each other for hours on end.

New dog is lovely and easier to train than our original. She came here barely knowing a single command but she's learning quickly. If you ignore her (e.g. during eating) she walks off and entertains herself without a problem, no behaviour issues.

She was an outside dog almost always at her old home as a family member was allergic to the fur. We have an inside/outside set up here with dog doors as it is too hot to lock the dogs outside during the day and we have solar panel air conditioning inside so it's always controlled temp, no matter how hot it is outside. So she's learning the inside thing. The only issue is at night. With a newborn in our room, we keep our bedroom closed from the dogs. Our original dog just sleeps in the loungeroom or out on the decking where the dog beds are. He has no interest in sleeping in the bedroom with us. But new dog - if she can't sleep in the same room as us, she goes outside and barks! It's only been a couple of nights since she came so she's very much still transitioning. We don't live in an area where we can let a husky bark and whinge loudly outside all night. My husband has been sleeping on the couch and she's fine with that - she just wants one of us where she can see us, rather than behind a closed door.

I don't want dogs sleeping in the bedroom or the bedroom door open when there is a baby in a crib. This new dog used to sleep locked outside alone, so this needy behaviour is very new to her. Could it be more growing pains from being with a new family and house, or are we encouraging anxiety while having husband sleep on the couch?

Since you say that he's a quick learner, what you're seeing is quite probably what you diagnose as growing pains. She's in a strange place, with new people who are friendlier so she's trying to find her place - obviously *not* in your bedroom.

From the way you phrase it, it sounds like you're in an apartment or similar, where you have to be noise conscious - and that's going to make it harder to get her comfortable that you're not going to leave her. I think what I'd try is to keep her inside at night but not with you and hubby in the bedroom. You may loose sleep for a few days telling her to "be quiet" but with hubby sleeping on the couch you're going to encourage her to be possessive, in my opinion.

Nope no apartment, we live in a 4 bedroom house with a backyard, but it's a quiet suburb with lots of neighbours. None of our neighbours care about dog noise, but we have one retired couple living next door who would complain a tree swaying in the wind too loudly if they could. So they are not understanding, not even for 5 minutes, regarding dog barking or howling or any noise made by anyone.

Anyways, yeah I agree, probably not going to encourage good behaviour by having a human with her.

You may try confining both dogs to the house in a room with a radio turned on low and see if that helps.
