10 week Sib Husky pup questions Empty
PostSubject: 10 week Sib Husky pup questions   10 week Sib Husky pup questions EmptySat Apr 23, 2016 6:31 pm

Hi all. So I finally have my pup, 2 weeks now and she is fantastic although I have a big concern.
She took a week to settle which was hard and I am still trying to find a food that works with her (Orijens puppy does not!!)

Anyway back to the problem. We have a cat, who we love equally and over the last few days Luska has been getting more and more confident with her. She now jumps on her back (initially playing) but then tilts her head around his neck and opens the jaws. We are keeping a very close eye on both and Luska now sleeps in a crate but I am concerned that those genes are going to kick in and our cat will be lunch in the coming weeks (this cannot happen!!)

I need help as I cannot take her out for a few more weeks or use training classes either. Today was so bad I considered rehoming her which is the last thing I want to do.

Please help!!

Graham

You are going to have to set the boundaries for her with the cat if the cat isn't going to do it for you. In a perfect world your cat would scratch her and set the boundaries, but that doesn't seem to be happening. When she goes for the cat pull her away and give her something else to do. Redirect her attention to something acceptable. Just because she is too young for puppy classes doesn't mean you can't start having your own classes in house. Are you doing any training with her? What kind of mental and physical stimulation is she getting daily?

She is getting lots of play time with the family and is very happy. We tire her out and she sleeps well in her crate. We feed the car first so Luska can see. We then feed Luska last. Our cat tolerates her a little too much I fear. When Luska does play/attack that cat we put her outside and ignore her for a while. When we put her out though she freaks and jumps at the glass door and shoulder barges it which is concerning.

We are also teaching her no commands with a firm voice. She listened to me to a point but nobody else.

Gra74, I think you're saying that you're teaching her "no" commands ... in a few months that'll work but for the time being you'd be better off using specific commands. "Off" the couch; "down" when jumping on people; "set" is obvious; go to your "crate"; "laydown" for lay down, for examples. "No!" generally just means (to her) that you're excited about something but she's doesn't yet have context to know what you're saying "no" about.

I'm also surprised that kitty hasn't put her in her place; most cats have 20 very pointed methods of saying "I don't like this!" and aren't afraid of using them. Are you really sure that the cat's not allowing her to play?

Yep sorry, 'no' commands. I have also been using 'off','bed' and 'down' with some success. My concern is my cat is very very chilled and I don't think he understands the importance that he needs to set boundaries. I will keep on keeping on and hopefully everything will settle. I am amazed at the difference in temperament of Luska in the last week though. She has gone from the shy one from the litter to a complete nutter!!

I'm new on here too... Our Husky, Dawson is 15 weeks old. We have 3 cats, 2 of which hate dogs and stay away from him. If he gets too close they hiss but he basically leaves them alone. Our third cat thinks she is a dog and loves hanging out with our dogs. She actually exercises Dawson in our yard. She gets him to chase her and if he gets too aggressive she darts up a tree or a location he can't reach. While we are waiting for all of his shots, this is great exercise for him. I would think that if your cat feels threatened by Luska, he will put her in her place. He may just not be too bothered by it.
