Picked up some musher's secret with the intention of using it while we are hiking here next month. We will be dealing mostly with rocky terrain and large boulder outcrops that can be very hot. Was wondering how long musher's secret holds up for. Will I need to reapply on the trail, between trails? I saw where some people said the dogs would lick it off, does it ever become more solid in which I need to wait a little bit so it has time to "dry" before hitting the trails? It's supposed to show up today so I haven't had my hands on it yet to feel it for myself.

Jenn,I have only used it in winter to keep snow from sticking to the paws.

i wonder how it will do on hot surfaces... it is a hard lotion that when warmed is like a soft paste that you then rub on the dogs feet and is absorbed, think hard core lotion for dogs. its kind of like coconut oil when its hard. its also great for our hands so when you are done with the dog just rub it into your skin
i would say to have some with you on the trail. we carry a small amount in a bag all year long.
I think dog booties might be a better option for you though.

I have been wondering about booties. Thought about buying them to deter from digging in the back yard. lol. Wasn't sure if the dogs would have time to get used to wearing them before we leave though. If they are anything like breaking in a pair of hiking shoes may need more than a month to start putting a lot of miles on such a thing. I will start by applying before each trail and see how it holds up.

no need to break in the booties, they will "learn" to walk in them once they realize they are not coming off and if they want to move around they will have to with the boots on! tough love

I've thought of them for Ami 'cause he gets so many ice balls in winter - can the dogs get them off themselves? Do the fall off in deep snow?

If left alone they can get them off by eating them. And if not strapped tight enough  (i  always worry its to tight ) they can fall off in deep snow. They used to make taller ones, they might, maybe have to ask. But  for only  $3 a boot just buy extra. I keep them  in jacks pack at all times. Never know when you will need them

Thanks, Jenn - so use them for walks in fresh snow, forget about putting them on for running around the yard unsupervised...got it!
