| Subject: Pee'ing in crate Sat Apr 30, 2016 2:42 am | |
| So another problem I am facing with my new best friend is she pees in her crate. Obviously each time she does it is put her outside and thoroughly clean it to remove the smell but it's a daily thing now. She knows to go outside and will pee and poop out their far more but every morning when I get up she will have peed and sometimes will go in there in the day even when the door is open to outside. She is 11 weeks BTW. |

| At 11 weeks old, they don't have bladder control. They also aren't able to go through the entire night without needing to pee. She isn't able to hold it, so she's peeing in her crate. Now that she's done it a few times, she believes it's an acceptable place to pee. So she's doing it more often, including going in there to pee when she's outside the crate.
I recommend more frequent bathroom breaks. She's 11 weeks, so that means she'll need to go outdoors at least every two hours. She'll also need to go outside after sleeping, playing, eating, or drinking. You'll want to take her outside once or twice each night as well (say, midnight and 3 AM - remember that a puppy is a baby, so sleepless nights are going to occur for a month or two while you house train her). I also suggest putting a towel in her crate because it'll soak up the urine. If she pees, all you have to do is wash the towel and do a quick spritz with a cleaning solution and wipe with a paper towel. There won't be much, if any, urine to clean up thanks to the towel. The towel also prevents the urine from soaking into your puppy's fur (although if she's lying in it every night, she will start to stink).
With my own Husky, I'd bring him outside whenever I thought of it, and sometimes this meant every half hour. I'd also get up around 1 AM to take him outside. That went on until he was about four months old. As a result of taking him outside so frequently, he was fully house trained by four months, which means he sleeps through the night and I don't have to take him out as much. Most dogs aren't house trained until 6 months, or longer for smaller breeds, so it pays off to give them frequent bathroom breaks while they're young.
Another great method for house training is the umbilical method. This basically means the puppy is attached to you by a leash whenever she's not in her crate or outside. You can keep a close eye on her and stop accidents before they start. You can also see when she starts wanting to move towards her crate, signaling that she has to pee (this will double as a way to train her the crate isn't an acceptable spot to go). Then you can rush her outside before there's an accident. Another great thing about the umbilical method is she gets really attached to you, and dogs trained this way are often very well behaved. |

| I agree with the above poster. At 11 weeks, they can't hold their bladder for long, even if it means peeing in the crate. My suggestion is take her outside late at night before bed, and if you have to wake up at 12 am or 1 am then I suggest you do it. I did that with my husky until he learned.. they aren't fully house trained until at least 4 months, some earlier, some later... they are a smart breed and she will soon learn to go outside on her own, just pay attention to her cues (i.e. whining, circling, etc...) |

| Completely agree with whitehusky3, your pup needs more breaks. When Snow was young I walked him about every 2 hours, sometimes every hour. Since then, he's learned how to ring bells when he wants to go out but it took him about 7 months to stop having accidents completely.
I let him out in the yard a couple times throughout the day but I swear, he doesn't pee, it seems like he waits til he goes on our walks so he can paint the town lol I find myself checking my phone very frequently whenever I walk Snow cause of all the times he likes to stop and do business. |

| One thing not mentioned is that the crate is a fun safe place. Have you tried feeding in the crate? This associates the crate into the house or bed. Not the potty they do not want to go where they sleep and eat and eventually this can be broken. Additionally how big is the crate, the crate should be on the small side for 11 weeks. There should not be a lot of extra room so they can set up a bathroom on one side and a den on the other. Make it small enough that it would have to be one and the same. |

| Also does the pup have free access to water right up until bedtime or is it limited a bit? Of course this would not help with the day time pee in crate. |
