Switching to raw Empty
PostSubject: Switching to raw   Switching to raw EmptyTue Apr 19, 2016 6:07 pm

I'm finally diving in and making the switch to raw. Gonna pick up a 15cu freezer for the basement so i can get started right. Can anyone please help me with information regarding diet? I tend to be a worrier and i worry about screwing this up, so i want to do it perfectly for skye's sake. I found a good raw supplier below for my needs.

I need help with how to build the diet and how to make a balanced one, can any of the raw experts help me out? I figured out how much i need to feed, but i am not sure what gets classified as what. Can anyone give me an example of a weekly or monthly feeding diet you feed with the different proteins and sources so i can get a general idea???

Hey there, raw is an excellent way to have a healthy dog. There are several threads here on the forum to help you out. Val has put up some excellent threads, so be sure to read them. I feed a partial raw diet, so I do still include kibble, I have no room for a freezer, and I too worry about getting this science down pat. Things to know.........start with one protein source, most opt for chicken since bones are softer to start out with and you can monitor what type of chewer you have. I believe Val recommends one protein source for 4-6 weeks to start off, before introducing another protein. The 80/10/5/5 rule is probably the most commonly used formula to date...so 80% meat/muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver and 5% other secreting organs.......here is a link for some additional help. Since Skye is an adult, you may try and stick to one protein for a couple of weeks vs the 4-6 weeks, but I would watch and see how Skye does on it. Eventually I believe most raw feeders suggest feeding beef 70% of the time and rotating thru other protein sources for variety.

There are other various sources around the web to help, and again here in the raw feeding sub forum. The link I gave you, includes info on supplements. The supplier looks good, and is a good start, 2 things tho that may come to mind for you....1) don't feed the ground, bones are important to your dogs teeth and gums, if you opt to go the ground route, say because Skye isn't a good chewer, check the ground meat to make sure the ratios of bone to meat are correct, and give Skye a raw meaty bone every few days to clean teeth, and take away after the bone is cleaned up, like I said tho this is dependent on how well Skye chews bones. 2) you may find better deals even at your local grocer, so look for sales on meat that you would eat and get for Skye. Example the supplier you posted had chicken thighs, but they are over a $1 a pound, my grocery store recently had them on sale for 29 cents a pound. Personally going through a supplier is perfect when starting out, and eventually you will know exactly what and how to feed, and you can pick and choose between sales at the store and the supplier offering items that may not be easily accessible.

I know that Ashleigh(simplify) had been feeding raw and Val(huskyluv) has at times.....if you need more help give us a yell.
