Our is 10 weeks old. We have only had him 3 days but he will not go outside to toilet at all. I take him out when it's recommended to, however he only shows signs every 4 hours. And so far makes a mess in the house every 4 hours. I take him out when he shows signs and then he doesn't want to, few mins after being in he goes. I try and stop him in the middle but that hasn't always worked it's mostly done by the time I get him to stop. He does have a crate and so far no accidents in there. Just got a clicker too. I can put up with everything else but I don't know how I'm supposed to get him to know outside is where to go. I somehow managed to get him to pee on a mat and every time he has an accident I will wipe the cloth in the place I want him to go

Welcome to the forum Zoeyvonne.....potty training can be frustrating. When taking him out say go potty, when he does go outside say yes good boy go potty, (you can do this with the clicker, however I am not familiar at clicker training)I am not sure of your last statement, are you using the cloth that you used to clean up inside and wiping the outside grass for him to associate his pee outside to where you want him to go? Bell training may work, there's a few threads on that, use the search engine, you should be able to find them. Some things to understand, after play, after sleep, after food and after water intake they have to go, so take him out after those things. Is he pooping outside? if so mark that good behavior and verbally say go potty or good potty, you may have to treat so he gets the connection. Hope some of this helps.

Yeh the cloth I used to clean so the scent is there. Not pooing outside either. When I catch him in the house I shout to stop him and take him where I want to go but he just sits down. Today I took him outside because I could tell but he just sat down and the minute he got back in he did a wee

Did your breeder mention anything about starting potty training prior to you getting him? Also if he was born and raised inside, and the breeder did not work on taking them out to potty, he may not be making the connection, and is doing what he knows. If you have the time, I would do as I mentioned above, after drinking, sleeping, etc, take him out play a little, and see if that makes him more interested, you may have to stay out longer than you want, as soon as he is going potty, every time he does it outside verbally say good potty and treat, have him associate going outside as a reward a good thing.

| I did ask the breeder all he said was they all sleep in a big shed and go outside when they need to. I was outside for almost an hour yesterday and he still waited til he was inside.

Hmmmm, playing outside may work up the urge. You may need to find an area outside that is similar to his preference inside. Is he doing it on a hard surface floor, on a rug? He may not like the outside spot you have chosen for him to go, by finding something similar, so maybe concrete to represent hard floors inside, may be the trick, just as an example.

Yeh it's wooden floors inside and concrete outside. Neighbour even let me try on their grass incase he didn't like the concrete. We did have an enclosed garden but it's not anymore, we've had bad storms in Scotland and the fence blew off so I thought maybe he could just see too much going on

Haha, yea focus can be a big issue. It's a trial and error kind of thing, I've never really had an issue with either of mine not going outside. I hope maybe someone else can chime in here and give you more ideas, since I think I have exhausted any ideas that I have. Although they thrive on consistency so I would try the concrete again, since that would be most similar to the inside floors. If there is too much going on, he may not feel confident on going outside, fear based, so being positive and encouraging may help, reward the heck out of him, even if it's just a little that he does outside.

You might try taking him out and playing for a while then bring him back in, leaving him on leash and just stand with him for a bit just inside the door until he has a moment to calm down or make an attempt to squat and then take him right back outside. If he is trying to hold it until he gets back inside you might be able to disrupt his ability to hold it any longer by going back in for a bit, then when he would usually go, force him right back outside. Keep him tethered to you so he can't get far enough away to squat without you being able to quickly correct him. _________________

| Freedom in the house should be earned. I highly recommend using the umbilical cord method.

No luck again today. Went for 3 walks, time outside and each time still waited. A few times he actually went to the mat. I'm thinking of getting a trainer to come round and help us

I imagine the link JM put up is a leash tether to you at all times. Have you tried this? Tether him to you so that way you can catch him starting to look for a place to potty, pick him up take him out and say potty when he does then treat him and praise him, good boy go potty. If you can not tether him to you then he must be crated, only 2 options available to him. Otherwise, I suggest taking him to the vet for a possible medical problem, before a trainer, he may have a blockage or UTI or something else.

Well he finally went for a pee outside! Set up some mats where we want him to go and he did which was great, so I left it a bit see if he would poo, didn't, but did when we went inside -_- We are using the crate now, if he doesn't go outside then he goes back in it and try again in 20 mins or so.

Well it worked, wouldn't have suggested mats but, it worked, and for now that may be the only way. Try the tethering to you thing if you do not want him in his crate all the time, that way where you go he goes, and you can pick up on his cues. PRAISE him non stop when he does go outside.A few things about huskies.....you must be one step ahead of them, tough love is a must(nothing mean, but using the crate or the tether), being consistent, having a routine, and restrict freedom until they earn freedom, most of the time it results in baby steps, but they are babies. Congrats, and you are on your way. Also, they are a very smart breed, if you get anxious, or upset they know, and frustration from you will bring out the stubborn in them. I wish you continued success, and keep us posted on his progress.

I couldn't do the tethering I feel stuck in the house as it is. I prefer the crate but I think he's just getting miserable in it now cos he just will not go outside again.

Only tether him to you when you think he has had enough of his crate, then tether him to you while you do your thing, for instance if you are doing dishes, tether him, and he lays next to you. On the computer, tether him to you and he will lay at your feet, that way, as soon as he gets up to find a place to potty you know it, you stop what you are doing, and say go potty? in a happy voice and escort him outside and say go potty, when he does, treat him and say good potty. Word association. I certainly understand the feel of stuck, but he is a baby, and they need a lot of attention. You are the one who is shaping him into what you want as an adult dog. He will not train himself. You have to set him up for success. Interaction with him will form a bond, he will be more receptive to you by starting this bond, and not feel "stuck", because I can assure you he knows you feel "stuck". I have a 6 month old, and let me tell you, until she was a solid 4 months she went potty outside, in cold weather, every 20 minutes, haha, well maybe not that frequently, but enough that it frustrated me, often times I had to take deep breaths and remind myself she wont be a puppy forever. The best solution to feeling stuck, is to have someone else in the house take care of the puppy, using your strategies, and you get out of the house for a few minutes. I can honestly say, a husky puppy is as difficult and challenging as having a human baby. Working through this in a positive manner now, not only sets the pup up for success, but it sets you up for success. I like to see people work through issues on their own, because like I said it will help you as well. In your circumstance it may be helpful for you to bring in a puppy trainer who is skilled in challenging, stubborn breeds, as in german shepherds, malamutes and huskies, if they have experience in these breeds, they may be able to help you get past some frustration you have, and help teach you how to work with your pup as a team. Frustration and feeling stuck now, will only get worse as he ages, especially in an inexperienced dog/husky owner. You will encounter things like puppy mouthing, counter surfing, chewing up items, teething. They are the greatest breed, but they pose a lot of challenges in the beginning, set yourself up for success, so you can set up your pup for success. There are many of us here who can help you. Ask as many questions as you need, and we can help guide you.

I am thinking of getting a trainer but it's not cheap. It's definitely easier while my boyfriend is at home, he's the one who wanted a husky, but then he will be back away to work for most of the week and I really struggle by myself. Im ready to praise him. He's not been since about half 12. Just not interested in doing it outside.

| As far as trainers, ask if they are experienced with the 3 breeds I mentioned, a couple of in home training sessions should be all you need, it is really just to help you learn how to interact with your puppy. And get some basic training skills you need, to help you feel less frustrated. Also a little time alone for you without the responsibility of the pup will take a bunch of stress off of you, have your boyfriend watch the pup while you go shopping or something. All of the things you are gong through is quite similar as to having a baby, so do not think it is different, and stress the similarities to your boyfriend. The biggest reason why puppies get surrendered to rescues or rehomed is because the primary care giver does not have the set skills needed to deal with a puppy, huskies are notoriously more difficult than most breeds. Have a chat with the boyfriend before resentment sets in. Tell him you need some alone time, away from the puppy, because you are becoming frustrated. Also get some info on trainers, have a dollar amount that you know you will need, and talk to your boyfriend, and explain that you need some guidance and this should be this amount of money to help you.
Some of your statements says a lot to me....feeling stuck, he was the one who wanted a husky....Once the pup is older, you will think things differently, it is working through the issues now. I can not imagine my life without my 2 girls. I live out in the country and my husband is gone 12-13 hours a day. My life would be so lonely, so quiet with out them. I feel so much love from them, I feel secure with them near me. Changing your mindset and getting help that you need, will make all the difference in the world. Hang in there. The aggravation now will be worth the fun and love in the future. |

I think it's worse than having a kid at the moment. I have a 5 year old and I used to be able to leave the room to go to the toilet without her waking up and crying! There's slightly less stress now we are leaving him to cry to sleep. First few nights I was in the same room and I discovered where all the non squeaky floorboards are. I want to enjoy him I know what is to come

Hang in there, I have no kids, but I was comparing things with a friend of mine who has a baby, and she agreed puppies are worse than babies in the beginning. It will get better.

Zoe, one other thing that I missed after reading over the posts.....having him tethered to you is an easier way to pick up on his cues that he has to potty, if he is loose in the house and you are doing something you will not notice him sniffing around and looking for a good spot to go. By having him tethered to you, you will automatically know when he has to go outside, because he will get up and want to find a spot. That should also help you, notice his cues. Good job glad he is getting the idea.

We don't let him roam around. He stays in the front room and I can tell when he needs it but being a bit more strict now taking him out almost every hour. If I have to go off and do something he just get put in his crate
