Subject: Silky leash training log Sat Feb 12, 2011 10:11 pm
So after watching those videos posted about silky leash walking, I decided to start trying it with my two. Siku pulls like crazy on the leash and Elara doesn't quite get how to walk on the leash yet, mainly she gets right in front of me almost tripping me. Since I'm usually terrible about training at home (usually wait until I'm in class and give the lame excuse that I didn't have any time that week to train), so I decided to start a training log and see if I could stick to it. And I'll see if the silky leash training works. I already do clicker training with both of them, so it looked like a good way to train.
Here are the videos that were posted in a different post.
Day 1 (2/12): Did a 11 min session with Siku in the bathroom. She did alright, but I think I'll do another one in the bathroom to see if she gets the concept a little better. Did a 6 min session with Elara in the bathroom. She did great and I'll probably do the next session half in the bathroom and half in the bedroom. She does, however, take treats too rough. Those puppy teach hurt! So I did a little session of taking treats gently. I'm also going to show her in conformation, so I also practiced showing teeth and to stand and wait. I'm going to do them both in agility too. Siku is taking classes already, but she is deathly afraid of the seesaw. So I have one at home that's only a few inches off the ground to get her used to it moving and the sound it makes. So I did some seesaw practice with both dogs (Elara loves the see saw BTW) and then some jumping practice to get their form right. Pretty much you set up a jump inside on the carpet and put the treat really low on the other side, so the dog learns to keep its head down while jumping. In the end that makes it easier to make sharp turns after a jump. Note I did keep the bar very low for Elara, only 3 inches off the ground, and didn't do that for very long. Both did really well, and Siku is starting to get over her fear of the seesaw.
I have dog classes all day tomorrow, so I probably won't be training at home. I have a conformation class for Elara at 10, obedience and agility class for Siku at 11 and 12, then a break, then puppy class at 2:30. It's going to be a long day!

Sounds like a good day though, good luck! Interested to see how this goes with the leash training and how long it takes to see results.

So just got back from a long day of dog classes. Went pretty well, but Siku decided she had had enough and would rather go over an smell the goats instead.
One thing I'm going to start doing is to walk her in her gentle leader when I'm not training her. The videos recommend walking in a harness, but I want to keep that just for pulling.
