| Hi guys i recently switched up my puppy to a raw diet about 1 week ago and he is loving it. He is turning 15 weeks on Sunday. He weighs about 16-17lbs last time i checked. I am feeding him about 10 oz of chicken drum stick, .5oz of beef liver, and .5oz of chicken hearts. I usually split this up in 2 meals. I am still learning the whole muscle meats and bones thing. Having a hard time finding cheap beef. Usually aim to get  the meat no more then $2.25 CAD. I was checking on a flyer from a Asian market and they had Mullet fish for sale for $ .99c CAD. How do i serve my puppy fish. Do i just thaw it out and give it to him whole with the bones and scales or should I pay the extra $.30c to get it cleaned . They also have frozen beef neck bone, would this be a safe option. Also I am looking to find some tips on how to actually give him the food. I usually put it in his bowl and he runs into his crate and takes it out and eats it on the pad. Would there be a better way to give it to him so its more sanitary? Sorry I am a big noob |

| I don't feed raw so I am not a whole lot of help. But, with the fish, at least with salmon, you might want to freeze it for a bit to kill any parasites...oops, just saw the "thaw it part". So second part of my thoughts - be really sure you want to feed fish. I picked up a salmon head to give to Ami and Archer as a treat - it was HUGE - I ended up quartering it and giving them each a quarter at a time. And they STINK STANK STUNK. The fish was really nice and fresh - but man, the fish breath and then the fur (from them playing and chewing/hauling on each other like they do. I still have the other half of the head in the freezer - I'll give it to them on a day when they can be outside...All day long. And maybe put some mint and parsely in their dinner that night I do give Ami frozen beef neck bones - he loves them. But I'm not sure there is enough meat on them to qualify as a feeding rather than as "recreational" bones. He tears off the bits of meat, gnaws on all the connective tissue and bone but then buries what is left. He always gets his bones outside - too messy for the house. There are several raw feeders on here but this is the weekend. You might want to come back Mon or Tues and bump this thread to the top for better answers than I can give. |

| Paul, feeding raw that is frozen may help, as well as either feeding outside or on tile/or whatever is in your kitchen, and then spot clean the area.
Here is a guide that I think is pretty easy to follow and will help answer some of your questions. We also have a huge section here on the forum under raw feeding, since you posted in the correct spot, reading some of the threads and stickies should also help.
http://rawfeddogs.org/rawguide.html
I think this is the most straight forward guide, easy to follow, and breaks everything down for you. It is great that you are feeding raw, imho, so good luck. And if the guide I gave you doesn't answer something, please ask any questions you have.
With fish, I would feed frozen, however I do offer some caution on feeding fish, some fish contain high levels of mercury, so if it is not human grade I would pass. Again though read the article, and I will look to see what type of fish you are asking about. |
