| Hi! I have a 10 month old Siberian Husky, named Kai, and he resides outdoors most of the time. We have a concrete back yard with a garden sectioned off with grass and dirt. Kai sleeps in his dog house which we built with tiles for the flooring. Recently I've noticed some rough dry cracks on his paw pads and there are some patches of pink-red coloring. Not blood associated, well at least no physical signs. I am very worried about his health. Is it because the weather has been too cold? I read somewhere that an owner applied Vaseline on the injured areas and put socks over his pet's paws, however I'm unsure about the safety/toxicity measures with that method.
Currently he seems to be doing well. His paws don't seem to bother him, but I'm very concerned about possible chronic effects. Any help would be very greatly appreciated. Thank you! |

| With a concrete yard I'm not sure how you could prevent that. Maybe place some old rugs outside on the concrete? If he was an inside dog I think it would be much easier to prevent. Booties would help I think but would not be practical to have him wear all the time. If he has to live on concrete it might just be best if he gets calloused pads though. |

| Vaseline isn't going to bother him unless he just licks a ton of it, then it will probably give him a belly ache. The biff with the socks is that he could chew on them and eat them causing a blockage if you aren't out there to keep an eye on him all the time. Since you said he resides outside most of the time I am assuming that he is out there alone without supervision. Musher's Secret will do wonders. Much stronger than Vaseline, but Vaseline will work in a pinch until you can get the Musher's Secret, just don't leave him unattended with socks on his feet.

| Thank you so much guys! I've been applying Musher's Secret and it seems to be getting slightly better so far! I will have to do more research about the effects of concrete on the paw pads though. Thanks again everyone! Happy new year! |
