Help! My husky just started eating the sheepskin pad in his crate.
In two nights, he has destroyed half of it.

Bodhi is a rehome that I've had for two months.
He's never done anything like this before, except for the odd sock.
No new stress, and he sleeps peacefully (I think) until I get him in the AM.

Do any of you know of a crate pad cover made of an undestructable material, like kevlar?

Koda refuses to sleep with anything in his crate lol He will destroy anything in there with him and is most content to simply lie in there with a toy. We learned that the hardway. Four sleepless nights the first four days we got him and two beds later...

Nothing is indestructible to a husky. Twisted Evil Our boy destroys anything that is in his crate too, and we also learned the hard way. What I do now is line the bottom of his crate with newspaper, he destroys it and I don't care because I can just throw it away and replace it with the next day's news. Smile I wouldn't recommend that if he eats what he destroys. My boy has eaten a little bit of newspaper on a few occasions and he always vomits it back up later. Rolling Eyes

We use the pet blankets from costco. Folded up on one side of the crate. When we did crate them they left them alone, never tried the full length beds in them. Maybe he is telling u he does not want anything in with him? Are u also leaving a toy in there with him, having a toy destraction might make him leave the blanket alone...

I don't have anything in Ginger's crate, except a bowl of water that snaps to the wires. The pad on the bottom is a foam pad in a micro-suede like cover...

Come to thinjk of it, she hasn't destroyed anything since we've had her...

We have a cushy Midwest one from Amazon and Nikolai loves it, but he's not destructive at all...

I have a friend whose dog *destroys* bedding and she swears by these: http://www.primopads.com/

PostSubject: Re: Indestructable crate pad cover?   crate - Indestructable crate pad cover? EmptyMon Apr 29, 2013 1:35 pm

This is a really old thread but I did the responsible thing and searched....so here goes!

When we first got Link somebody gave us a red Kong crate pad from Petsmart with the receipt. He left it alone allay for a while but at some point chewed a hole in it, and annoyingly the inner stuffing is the stronghold fuzzy stuff that is just screaming for an emergency vet visit and intestine surgery. Why do people out this stuff in things meant for dogs?!? The "good news" is that they'll take it back and replace it with no questions. However, once is enough and I don't want another one.

Since then I've put in a couple of blankets for him to sleep on and he started to chew those too, not destructively but enlighten to either open them or shred them to where I'm now worried about him investing pieces. I found an old, kinda suedeish blanket that has no internal stuffing so it can't be opened, bit it isn't that thick or comfy seeming.

I'm starting to feel bad about him sleeping on just the plastic floor. He doesn't seem to mind and I fully realize that the idea of a soft comfy bed for a dog is a bit overrated.....I'be seen him sleep peacefully on our kitchen floor for months and even on concrete. But I still can't get comfortable with his bed not being cozy, even if only on my own irrational, emotional level.

Any suggestions or guidance??

Thanks.

I'll second the Primo Pads solution.
Bodhi chewed up blankets and old rugs when we put them down on the floor of his crate.
Since we've had the Primo Pad in there, he's left it alone.

I ordered this one for my little guy:

http://www.petco.com/product/120805/Brinkmann-Pet-Weather-Resistant-Orthopedic-Pet-Bed.aspx?CoreCat=MM_DogSupplies_Beds

It seems fine, wouldn't put it in the indestructible category exactly, but pretty good. Although I'm not sure eating foam would be any better for him than eating fluffy stuffing.

The other one I'm considering is:

http://www.petco.com/product/11377/Precision-Pet-SnooZZy-Sleeper-Black-Crate-Mat.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductListTopRated_Dog_1-_-Precision%20Pet%20SnooZZy%20Sleeper%20Black%20Crate%20Mat-11377

But I'll see how he does with the other one first.

You could also try a moving blanket type of material or thin bedspread. Although, I feel like, if he's actually eating blankets, then maybe just have him go without until you can trust him. Or go really old school and make one yourself and stuff it with pine needles.

I'll check those out, thanks. To be fair, the blankets he ate were woven types marketed as "Indian" blankets. So I guess opposed to that I am looking for something with a more solid, continuous construction.
