Forum Rules
1. Here we prefer clarity to agreement. Obviously not everyone is going to agree on a topic; here we prefer to talk out our differences in a respectful manner to ensure mutual understanding and respect.
2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

Rest In Peace Ava Empty
PostSubject: Rest In Peace Ava   Rest In Peace Ava EmptyWed Dec 30, 2015 7:58 pm

This is unfortunately my first post.  I'm a long time reader.  This is single handedly the worst day of my 34 years on this planet.  I woke up yesterday to my 11 month old baby girl licking me in the face shortly after the alarm went off as she does daily.  From there it was all downhill.. Please please please keep me in your thoughts and prayers, I'm devastated.  The day you get a new puppy you dread that day in 10 or 15 years, you never expect it in 11 months.    Crying or Very sad

I took Ava (my 11month old Husky Pup) for a spay yesterday.  She came out of surgery just fine around noon.  The vet called me and let me know she was fine and could be picked up at 4 or 5.  I arrived at 4:30 and they didn’t bring her out to me or let me back to see her.  The vet pulled me aside and let me know that she had some internal bleeding on the ultrasound and he was going to go back in and make sure all the sutures and ligatures were tied up.  They were.  He did have to give her a blood transfusion as she was down nearly 500ml of blood that had seeped into her body from somewhere.  He called me every hour throughout the evening to let me know how she was.  He did not leave her side.  She wasn’t waking up from the anesthetic.  I went to see her again at 11:00PM last night and she looked fine, was just sleeping between fleece blankets, heart rate was good, EKG was good, and she was breathing on her own.  I left at 11:30PM expecting to pick her up in the morning.  I got a phone call 30 minutes later that she passed.  Her coagulation tests showed her PTT and PT were both above normal but not high.  They believe she clotted after the transfusion and one of the clots made it's way to her heart, lungs, or brain.

I'm so thankful that I have my 6 year old male Sib here by my side....  I'll upload pictures when I can look at them, right now I can't even stomach opening iPhoto.

Thank you all so much, I don't think i've had 5 minutes today without crying my eyes out. Everything I try to do and everywhere I try to go I'm thinking of her.

Hey Geoff, while I agree with everyone else that it's tragic to lose any pet - especially one to a procedure that's so common and "simple". It's no help to know that you were doing the right thing by having her spayed because she's still not there with you. It's a <0.1% chance of something going wrong, but with any surgery, the possibility still exists.

Hug the big boy for all of us and try not to beat up on yourself too badly ...
