| Thanks guys! Poor baby won't eat anything, but I keep offering a small cup. Any idea when she might start eating again? |

| It may take until tonight or tomorrow. You may want to try a little hand feeding of cooked chicken. If she isn't eating it means her stomach is upset by the drugs they gave her, so best not to feed her much, or she'll just throw it up. Trust her instincts Tyler, I know easier said then done, but she will let you know she is hungry. |

| I'd leave a nibble out for her if she wants it; she should be eating - at least a little - around 24/36 hours. I'd be much less concerned with her not eating so long as she's drinking relatively normally (which she may not for the first day). While I've never had a hysterectomy, it may be that she feels like she has a tummy ache. The effects of the anesthesia can last for a couple of days, depending on what they used. Also remember that she was on an IV during surgery (or she should have been) so she's quite apt to have to pee more than normal; she was also fasted for, probably, 24 hours before the surgery so she won't have to poo for a day or so. A couple of things you don't want to do, don't "treat" her to anything special - her system is out of balance right now ( and will be for a couple of days ) you don't want to, for example, give her hamburger and have her throw it up and inhale it. (( yes, there are "good" terms for all of that, but that's simplified )) She should be eating at least some by the third day - when she's gotten hungry - if she hasn't at least started nibbling then it's time to think about a vet call. | Thanks guys for all the comments. I think she's doing fine, but it is the 3rd day after the surgery and she still is sleeping all day and all night. Could she be depressed? The incision looks great, looks to be healing well. She's eating and drinking just fine. I can't get her to get out of her crate. I've been letting her sleep, but it's making me nervous she hasn't bounced back yet. |

| Tyler, I'd argue with your math - you brought her home on Friday afternoon and this is Sunday so you're really only a little over 48 hours since her surgery. She's been 'wounded' and dogs, like people, heal differently. Some will bounce back in 24 hours and be 'hell on wheels' while others are going to want to take it easier for a couple (maybe a few) days.
Since she's eating and drinking - and I hope 'going outside' from time to time as well - I wouldn't be too concerned. If she's not out and around by Tuesday(ish) or decides to stop eating and especially if she stops drinking or if she doesn't need / want to go out then I'd say a vet call is in order.

| Thanks al, I really didn't expect a response on a Sunday.
So I think I figured it out. She might be having a false pregnancy. She brought all of her toys into her crate and now she's whining at them and licking them. She also growls is I mess with them. (I went to love on her) I read that sometimes the drop in hormones can cause one. She's acting so strange but it is adorable. I am in WAY over my head here. I don't have a damn clue what I'm doing... |

| Okay, you had me go looking. While the accounts from various sources seem to be arguable I found this interesting since it's a little more factual: - Quote :
- If an animal undergoes an ovariohysterectomy (spay) during the time when progesterone levels are high, the sudden drop in progesterone following surgery may cause false pregnancy. This drop may tell the prolactin to increase too, causing the milk production. It is a normal response to the hormone changes brought upon by the surgery. This hormonal change is similar to delivery.

| Tyler, Miya has done this twice this year. My only suggestion is to remove the toys, and do not allow her to get them back for the time being. I know it sounds mean, but this is the only way she will stop believing she had pups. Otherwise, she will become protective, and it may induce lactation. Ugh, I am sorry this has happened to Koda, and you are officially number three in the known group of us. Jenn (Twisterll) has a similar issue with Kenzi. |

| Al, isn't that super weird? She kept crying and howling, and then the toy collecting started.
Renee, I believe she has started lactating... I will take them away tonight while she's outside so she doesn't see me doing it. How long does it usually last for Miya?
It is very cute, but the stress of her healing plus this whole deal, plus my personal life is falling apart... i'm about to start losing hair.. |

| Tyler, Miya is the same way. She becomes even more vocal, she moves her bedding around (fluffing up her nest), collects toys. After taking them away, and for me I do it when she isn't around too, it may take a couple of weeks. Be vigilant that she doesn't sneak any, or it will start all over again. If her appetite is not good, it's also a sign. In fact that's when I know, because with Miya it starts with lack of appetite. Yes it is so cute, and hard not to let her do it. But, the longer you allow her to do it, the longer the symptoms persist. I think, or hope, in your case it's just this one time, because of the hormone fluctuation. With Miya we were warned by our vet, only one ovary was found and the other one "may" drop, that's how they put it, and that she "may" go into heat, which she has. Never knew about the false pregnancy, and with her last 2 heats that's what happened. I was so upset, because she wouldn't eat. Last year I did a thread about why she wouldn't eat, and then I researched false pregnancies, and sure enough that is why she has no appetite. Similar to Koda, Miya's hormones drop, because I imagine she doesn't produce enough. Jenn has mentioned the toy thing, nesting, being more vocal, not wanting to go away from her "babies" too. I am sure it is because of the hormone drop, I would call your vet and tell him/her about it so they can add it to her records. |

| I have started giving Kenzi melatonin when she goes into false pregnancy and I have seen some help with that. It doesn't boost her appetite but has helped with the whining. One pill in morning and one at night. _________________ |
