| Ugh, not happy. My family cooked some chicken legs and my father was taking off the meat for the dog. As he was cleaning up, the chicken leg fell on the floor and my puppy ran to it (of course) and swallowed it. I asked my father if he chewed it but he said he just swallowed it, about 2 inches long. Naturally, I freaked out and of course wasn't there when all this happened but my father said he didn't choke or gag. I told him to give the puppy some bread. Apparently, he ate his lunch and was acting fine. I am seriously hoping he will pass it intact. Just wondering if anyone here experienced a similar situation and if there are any warning signs I should look out for. Thanks! |

| If he swallowed it whole - was the bone intact? That is, no sharp fragments? You want to make sure that what goes in goes out - that he continues to eat and poop normally. No obvious belly pain. Me? Given puppy's age, I'd give a call to the vet and see what they recommend. He's what, less than 4-6 months old now? The geometry does not look promising. Hopefully, the chemistry will do the trick (highly acidic stomach contents to dissolve the bone) but I wouldn't put all my eggs in that basket.
Damn pups - they want to age us before our time. There are numerous threads on here as owners have gone through the mill with puppies and ingested foreign bodies. Good luck. My fingers are crossed for you. |

| I wont be of much help but I would also consider asking a vet about this, like Amy said maybe the natural stomach acids could take care of it but for a pup it's tricky.
I feel your worry/panic though.. My boy has put us through many episodes including bones but not like the size you described. Mylo has been a champ and successfully passed everything his damn mouth has gotten himself in to. And I'll echo everything that Amy said* |

| Sarah, be aware that if he does digest it completely (and the odds are good he will) his feces will probably come out very firm and possibly have a tinge of white to it. Bones, both cooked and raw, often seem to have this affect. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| Sarah, I am going to agree with everyone else. So my only thing to add is, at about 4 months old, my great husband, decided that Miya needed a buddy, in the form of a baby duck. He believed by giving her a duck, she would stop chasing our neighbor's ducks. Poor decision on his part. She decided to play bow and woo at the duck, he told her no. she ate the duck, feathers, beak, and it's flippers(feet), about 3 days later feathers, beak, and flippers came back out. It kinda sounds funny now, but I swear I yelled at my husband for a week after, and I was petrified that she wouldn't be able to pass it, she's been allergic to duck ever since. I wish you luck, I'm pretty sure it will all come out ok, haha. And just keep an eye on him. |

| Thanks guys. Renee: a duck?!?! oh my! I'm assuming her poops must have been quite colorful! Was the duck alive? My father feels so guilty and horrible about what happened but since I am not there, I told him what to do. I have heard bread and pumpkin to bulk up the fiber in his stomach helps pass the stool easier so my father have him 2 slices of bread yesterday and will give him fresh pumpkin for the next few days. I also told him to watch for white stuff in his poop like Al said and to monitor him carefully for the next few days for any warning signs (bloody poop, not eating, vomiting, etc...). What I find amazing is how he didn't even chew it! My father said he grabbed it and gulped it down. Amazing what these little buggers get into! |

| Sadly Sarah, yes ducky was alive. she was batting it around, when I told my husband to take the duck away Miya put it in her mouth, it wasn't a "viscous" kill, it was more like no you can't have my ducky. that was the last time she "killed" anything, and she did stop chasing our neighbors ducks, and coincidentally she can not eat duck, too rich for her. The pumpkin should help in getting the bone through, and as Al said, his poops may be all white and chalky. I imagine that was the best way for him to get a cooked bone, having him just swallow it, that way it couldn't splinter. I feed raw meaty bones, and when Sofie first started she swallowed pretty large pieces, and she would throw them up. So if he hasn't it more than likely is running through his system, just running slower. Beyond the signs already mentioned, if he can't poop, or he has very runny poop, it may be a sign of a blockage, so just continue watching the poops. And keep us updated. |

| In my experience, giving a raw beef bone a day, the poop comes out the normal brown color - but, it does turn a very chalky white withing a day or two and disintegrates into a dust fairly quickly. |

| Amy, yes this is my experience too, but that is with other food through the day. When Miya was a pup, there were days where she ate nothing but bone and a little meat, and her poops would come out white and chalky, I was scared to death the first time I seen that, then read up and figured out she was getting too much bone. |

| Well, according to my dad, so far so good. It's been 2 days since the bone swallowing incident and he says Shiloh appears normal: eating well, hyper energetic, no vomiting and no bloody poop. He said he did have some diarrhea last night and a soft poop this morning but no blood. He has his appointment tomorrow at the vet for his rabies shot so my dad will tell the vet what happened and what else to watch out for. I'm wondering how long it takes for a bone to dissolve and/or come out in the poop. I have heard 3 or so days but not sure. |

| Sarah, I love his name. Btw, when do we get to see some pics of Shiloh? Haha, you've been a pretty active member, and no pics, and may I add we love pics on this forum, lol.
To your question, I imagine it depends if his tummy decided to break down the bone. So longer if breaking the bone down then it would be for his digestive tract to eliminate whole. So 3 or so days, does seem to be about right. The vet will be able to give better advice than us, so I think another day will be fine. Puppies and diarrhea kinda go hand in hand, so I wouldn't worry too much. If it's all liquid, or that it is runny but very small amount then I would call the vet. |

| Hi Renee. I changed my profile pic Yes, I will have my dad monitor him another day or so and he will ask the vet tomorrow. My dad said he has seen some white specs in his poop so that could be the bone but not sure. Thanks for compliment on his name |

| Thank you Renee I will pass the message to Shiloh. My brother says his markings make him look like he is a raccoon! His father is a European, US, and Canada champion. His father is light red and white but the mom was black and white. The whole litter will look like his father. I was curious, have you ever titer tested your dogs and if so when did you do it? |

| Sarah, never titer tested. From what I have read it is used to see if vaccine is still effective rather than giving the vaccine. I think it works on percentage so if it's over a certain percent you can hold off on vaccine. If it's with your core shots, I would just do the titer, as long as it's been at least 4 weeks since Shiloh received them. Other vaccines I imagine you would titer test yearly in place of the vaccine. I hope that helped, and hopefully someone with more knowledge can chime in, if my info isn't quite right. Btw, I am going to ignore the vets reminder on Sofie's 4th set, since core shots are recommended and not a law, I feel I know what is best for my girls. |

| I believe I also read that you titer test yearly (if you can afford it) to see if they have enough immunity in lieu of vaccinating. Well, after much hesitation on giving Shiloh his 4th vaccine, I think I am going to do it because there is a bad outbreak of Rabies and Distemper in my neighborhood It even made the news last night! They say it's due to the racoons and foxes in the area. Shiloh did get his Rabies shot yesterday at the vet and my father brought in a stool sample and they found some Coccidia. Ugh.Funny thing is, he has no symptoms but he is getting 1 oral treatment for it today and they recommend to re-test his poop in 2 weeks. Has anyone experienced Coccidia in their puppies? As for the bone, my dad told the vet what happened. It's been 4 days now and my father thinks the worst has past. He eats fine, hyper energy, no vomiting so I think it's passed. |

| Sarah, Miya had Coccidia as a puppy, Sofie, vet never asked for a stool sample, so I assume she doesn't have it, since like you, she shows no signs. The medicine should get rid of it, but he must have sniffed or licked somewhere another animal went to the bathroom, because I believe that is how they get that. Yes, if there was something to be watchful for, I would certainly get the 4th round. Sofie got her rabies when she got her 3rd set of shots, so I will not have to worry about that for another year. Your vet didn't think the bone was an issue, good news. I will be so glad once Sofie is over 6 months, I love the puppy stage, but disease, parasites, worms and all that jazz just makes me worried. Once they hit 6 months, I feel so much more confident on them staying healthy, maybe that's just me, but I do feel better health wise once they hit 6 months. |

| Thanks Renee. Shiloh got an oral medication today from his vet for his Coccidia. She said to re-test his poop in one month. Ya, I think I will definitely give him a 4th round BUT NO MORE lol. I too love the puppy stage but seriously, they are sooooo vunerable because their immune systems aren't as strong as an adult so you have to keep an eagle eye on them at all times. I'm with you on that one! The vet also noticed Shiloh's skin is super dry and she recommended this topical stuff called Allerderm. Seriously??? more meds? My parents are in Canada now so I was thinking maybe the heat in the house is drying his fur. He does have that puppy dandruff and itches but it's not constant. I know it's not the food because he's still on Acana. I will wait until he comes here (south carolina) next week where it's a little more humid and see if the flakiness stops. Also, I thought maybe he's growing in a new coat but not sure if that happens at 4 months.. If you ever want to PM Renee, feel free! |
