Any Infomartion on Spaying/Neutering. My puppy is only 6 weeks, but I want to spay her as I also have a Male American Bull, I don't want "Little Issues" Does any one have info or recommendations.

The easiest thing to do right now is to neuter the male. Is there a reason you're keeping him in tact (ie- are you showing him or something?)? If he needs to be kept in tact, you should spay her before her first heat which is usually around 5 months.

There is debate as to when is too early and honestly, imo, it's a decision that is up to you and your vet. If it were my dogs, and I had a legit reason for keeping my male in tact, I would spay her around 4 months to be safe.

Others may have different advice I'll edit this and post a link to the other spay/neuter threads.

He is 9 years old, we have had him since he was 8 weeks... No special reason for keeping him in tact just feel guilty, sad to do it now.

The surgery is much less complicated for a male than it is for a female (much like in humans). I understand you not wanting to do it to him this late in life, but the reality is that a female can get pregnant BEFORE she starts showing signs of her first heat, so you're taking a gamble unless you get her spayed very early.

I would speak with your vet, or a vet that you trust, and talk about your options. I don't know how bad/difficult a surgery would be for a 9 year old male, so I can't properly recommend anything to you, but you need to be VERY careful.

I look forward to reading the post spay/neuter threads. I did a search and didn't find it. I like to be informed when making decisions and others experience and knowledge is great.

The only big concern with neutering a male who is older is the ever present concern of anesthesia. If he is healthy, it should not be a big problem, but do talk to your vet first. It is WAY easier on the dogs if you go ahead and get him neutered now and then spay her at 5-6 months. You can do "pediatric" spays at 6-8 weeks but that is really too early, imo. They do need the hormones and such as they are developing.
My advice, when you get them done, opt for the pain meds. They will appreciate the relief and will be bouncing around as normal in a couple of days. Years ago, when I didn't know really anything about dogs and got my first dog, I didn't get the pain meds when she was spayed and I regret it to this day. She was fine in a few days but I felt bad that she was hurting when I could have done something about it.

I would not consider doing until at least 4 month and definately get meds. Thank you.

Ditto on this! Even at his age, I would look into getting him neutered. It's not nearly as invasive as a spay and he'll recover a lot faster. Your young female I would do at 5 or 6 months. Also be aware that a recently neutered male can still get a female in heat pregnant! After neutering they still have active stuffies in them which will go away in time but don't think that you're safe right after a neuter. You'll still have to be careful with him around females for a few weeks after.

Pain meds are all well and good but you do want them to feel some pain so that they don't over-exert themselves. Typically you'll want to limit jumping and heavy running for the first two weeks and of course no bathing for two weeks after. Females especially need to keep activity down after their spay so you actually want them to feel a little bit of discomfort so they are not jumping and running around like they normally would. With that said I got pain meds for all of my dogs' spays and neuters but they were low doses and I did not use all of it. Now laser surgery is a lot safer and has a much faster recovery time but it also costs a bit more too.

This would also be my advice.

Certainly, limit their activity until stitches are removed. You don't want them to pull a stitch. Our fosters are crated alot for the first week or so after so they don't get too rambunctious.
However, even with pain meds, they are going to be uncomfortable. I can tell you from experience that the best pain meds just make the pain tolerable, not gone. C-sections aren't as bad as a spay and that was plenty uncomfortable even with good meds.

i'd get her done between 5-6 months, we just had zoey done a couple of weeks ago when she hit 6 months and she did great, you couldn't even tell she had just been fixed, she came home really to go and play
