8-Week-Old Husky : Walking Troubles? Empty
PostSubject: 8-Week-Old Husky : Walking Troubles?   8-Week-Old Husky : Walking Troubles? EmptyTue Sep 22, 2015 3:44 am

Hello everyone,

I'm new in this forum. Thanks for having me. I recently acquired an 8-week-old wooly siberian and noticed a strange heaviness to her gait around the back legs. She also tends to "bunny hop" when she runs or gets excited. She's my first husky and I've only ever had small to medium-sized dogs before her so I wanted to ask your opinion if I should be concerned about it. I've attached a video of her below to show you what I mean. I've also tried extending her back legs back and she doesn't seem to be in any pain. Is it normal for an 8-week-old sibe to be this kind of awkward?

I've read up on hip dysplasia and cushing's disease and I know by some standards it's a little early to tell whether or not her gait is a problem. I will of course take her to the vet for professional advice, but I also wanted to know, from more experienced owners, if this is something I need to be worried about. Any tips or advice would help Smile

Thank you!

Koda was like this too. I was always so afraid her hips were off or something was wrong. I think it's just a puppy thing. She should grow out of it in time. Beautiful Girl! Welcome to the forum!

Her walk and run look fine. Hard to tell through all that fur. Is she just really puffy or perhaps a little chunky? With whoolies it's hard to tell so if she isn't on the chunky side just ignore, but to help guard against things like hip dysplasia and joint issues keeping her on the leaner side until older will help her joints form with less stress and will smooth her gait out faster. She is adorable and welcome to the forum.

I think the hopping while running like that is normal for a baby. I call it the puppy run.

He does look like he could be a bit chunky, which could contribute to making his gait look a little off. I would say that he does look a little "stiff", but hard to tell if that means anything. He's still super young and is growing quickly, they go through many phases where they can look awkward because of this.

Thanks everyone! I feel so much more reassured. Yes, I am taking your advice and watching her weight. Most of that perceived volume is fluff but I'll look into her diet more and I plan to transition her to puppy food for large breeds. I'm also trying to get her to use her hind legs more (e.g. sit/stand exercises) just to be sure.

Thank you all for such a warm welcome Smile

Any possibility of mats in her back leg feathers? That occasionally happens with Ami and alters his gait - and he's not particularly cooperative in having them brushed/cut out. Mad
