| Just curious what others do, Akira has decided that she can jump up on the couch and she really loves it. Lol Our concern is that she will just jump on someone when she is bigger. So what do all you do? She gets so mad when we take her off. |

| It all depends ... as far as the couch goes, if you don't mind letting her on the couch, then by all means let her up to cuddle and give kisses. If you don't really want her on the couch, now's the best time you'll ever have to teach her that it's off-limits. Yeh, she's a husky, she'll gripe at you, but she'll learn. As far as jumping on someone, if you mean someone who'd just walked in and Akira goes over to give them an exuberant Husky greeting then keep a "house leash" (let's say about 3 ft/1m long) on her, then when she goes to jump up you have an available handle to get her under control quickly.
Old phrase when it comes to working with a dog, "Teach them NOW to be the dog you want them to be!" It's a lot easier to teach them what you expect then it is to unteach them bad behaviour later. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |

| The jump on someone I was referring to is if we have visitors sitting on the couch will the just jump on them? Just trying to teach her right from the beginning so it is easier. I guess what I am asking has anyone had any problems with letting your husky on the couch? Also, what things did you consider in making the decision to allow or not allow your husky on the couch? |

| Hmmm, Miya is allowed on the couch. Kinda weird for us, I have no idea how she knows that she needs to be invited up on the couch when we are sitting on it, yet knows if the couch is unoccupied she has free reign, lol. She is laying on the couch next to me right now, but if my husband were sitting here too, she will lay on the floor until we call for her to sit with us. I wonder if as Akira ages, and realizes her size, she will be more inclined to wait to be invited. I guess the easiest way to teach her this, is by having a solid lay down and stay. If she is good and does that, after a certain amount of time, if there is room, invite her up. If another person wants to sit, then teach her down (as in get off the couch), reward with good girl or treat when she does get down. Repetition is key in this type of training, with solid rewards for doing what you ask.....I hope that helps |

| Our family room couch is an expensive leather...non- negotiable. Toenails will scratch/tear. The sunroom chair and ottoman... it's old, needs reupholstery any way... it is now covered with old king bed sheets and is "his throne". The living room is off limits.
If I Had an old couch and didn't mind the hair, I'd have him up with us. Also... when Ami is feeling frisky and for whatever reason, cannot go outside, he is prone to take his frustration out on pillows and cushions so cannot be left alone. |

| Leo has is allowed on the couches although they're leather, but for some reason he doesn't really bother to lay on them. i think he doesn't like the way the leather couches feel. with we had cloth couches lol. |

| My two have free reign of the house, they even have their own bedroom, except for the living room, the living room is the only place I have couches and its a room not used unless I have company or its Christmas time (I set the tree up in the living room) so it's "blocked" off. When I have company, or its Christmastime, my dogs are allowed in there but they have yet to jump on the couches, they'll usually just lay under the tree (Christmas) or near the sliding glass doors.
As far as teaching Akira not to jump on the couches (if that's something you don't want her to do) you just use your "ahh ahh" or "no" or whatever words you already use with her so she knows it's something you find unacceptable, so she gets down. If she gets mad...she gets mad, lol, let her! Like kids who get upset when they're told "no", she'll get over it. Personally, I'd just teach her to be invited up, but that's just me...if you don't want her up, she has to be taught that. Huskies generally like their own space so I don't really see a problem with Akira jumping on people, but you know your dog better than I. In general though, if a person comes and sits on the couch while they're up there, they move to another couch or get down altogether, haha.
Although my two havnt become couch potatoes, they sure do love the beds! lol. |
