Day #3: Nya Bit a Toad Empty
PostSubject: Day #3: Nya Bit a Toad   Day #3: Nya Bit a Toad EmptyMon Aug 10, 2015 1:36 pm

I wasn't sure where this was supposed to go, so if it needs to be moved, please do so!

So, last night (it was only Day #3 since I've had her) I was taking Nya out for a walk when she came across a toad (which I didn't see because it was dark) and bit it. She spit it out and started shaking her head vigorously, which I had never seen her do before. I noticed foam coming from her mouth, which scared the bejeebus out of me. I scooped her up and got water for her. She drank the water, and I ran back outside with a flashlight to see what she had bitten and noticed that it was a toad.

I called the Emergency Clinic and asked if I needed to bring her in, and they said she should be fine after rinsing her mouth. Trying to rinse a new 8 week old puppy's mouth is something I would never wish on my worst enemy. It was awful. I don't think I've been more scared and unprepared for an experience like that in my life.

Needless to say, I was extremely cautious about taking her on her potty breaks following the incident. I kept waiting for her to throw up or having some other reaction, which never happened. And of course, Google was extremely scary and daunting during my panic phase.

Has anyone else had an experience like this? Is there anything else I should look out for when I take her out? I live in a semi-wooded area in Missouri, so I was bound to come across something. She's just so extremely curious about everything that I keep worrying that next time I won't be so lucky.

Hello fellow Missourian. She should be fine. If she was in another part of the world it might be a different story but the toads we have around here will do nothing more than leave a bad taste in her mouth and make her belly a little upset if she were to actually eat it. The toads slime coat did exactly what it is meant to do, get her to spit it out. Around here there aren't too many things critter wise that they bite into that will hurt them. Just don't let her jump on a copperhead or rattlesnake.

Thank you, Jenn. That's really reassuring. I used to foster a dog, and I never had a problem with her chewing random things, even as a young puppy. So, I hadn't expected Nya to want to chew on everything.

They are a curious breed. My girl isn't so bad about chewing on stuff, she is much older though, but when we are out on walks and if anything moves under the leaves she is pouncing on it in a flash whether she knows what it is or not. I've been thinking about going through snake training with her since we are often a long way from society when we walk. My mutt isn't half as bad about blindly going after things as my husky is.

Haha, Lycus did the same thing a while ago. Foam and all. I freaked out and made him drink water too by practically dunking his head in a water bucket lol!

He was fine as well and he still tries to go for them tongue

Last summer, walking Archer...he pounced on something, swallowed it before I could stop him, started pawing at his mouth...25 ft later vomited...there, totally coated in mucous and slime, a toad/frog.

He was none the worse. I was totally grossed out.
