| Every once in a while, Ginger will have this mucousy film around her BMs. But her BMs are formed and firm and only half will have this mucousy film covering it.
What does this mean? Is this normal?

| Mucous in the stool is not normal and indicates that something is wrong. Something is not sitting well with their intestinal tract and is causing the mucous. Could be colitis or IBS. Since the three of us have very sensitive dogs it is definitely related to their food sensitivity. My two sensitive dogs, Faith and Dakota, get mucous in their stool irregularly as well.
For you gals, It could be all the new raw foods being introduced. Something is not agreeing with them completely.
Whenever I see mucous in my dogs' stool I backtrack and put them on something I know they do well on like The Honest Kitchen and Perfect Form digestive aid with no other add-ins to get them back on track. Generally that does the trick and then I wait a day or two before resuming add ins and raw food.
If it's a regular occurrence I would recommend making diet changes, but if it only happens every once in a while then I wouldn't be too concerned especially if you have a sensitive dog like I know you both do. Faith and Dakota, on average, might have mucous in their stool once every week or two which is not enough to really concern me. _________________ |

| Oh ok! I think I know what it's from then...since that was the only 'new' food I introduced! It was ZiwiPeaks, believe it or not! It was the Venison-Fish formula! Which is very weird because I get her a tablespoon of the Venison formula a couple of times, and she was fine. I found a trial pack of the Venison-Fish formula and gave her a tablespoon of that yesterday and this morning was when she had a mucous film over her BM. Her BM was still firm and formed, but just with that film over it. And it was only half of her BM that had it. Funny because she's done well on ANY fish I give her.
Could it possibly be that the combination of raw and ZiwiPeaks be a little too rich for her at the same time?
This probably happens once every couple to 3 weeks, so I'm going to toss it up to new richer foods that she's been getting. But if it starts to happen more like once a week, I'll start to really take note of her diet and other factors.
Thanks Val!!

I'd have to agree with Val on this one. Just recently tried feeding Adobo & Biko a different brand of food due to the great price I received. Less then 2 weeks into it Adobo started having the mucous shits, took the food back to the store and went back to Taste of the Wild, within 2-3 days she was back to normal BM's. |

| Ginger is pretty much back to normal...she just had another BM and it's not mucousy anymore. I know exactly what it was....and I'm shocked! = I gave her Ziwipeaks Venison-Fish. She did OK on the Venison formula, and she does great will all fish...so I figured Venison-fish = no problem. But nope! Now...don't look at me like I'm stupid...but I accidentally bought the cat food. And when I took it back and asked for the dog food trial bag, they didn't have it and said it's the same formula. Well...I called today to let them know that, and they let me return it. And the owner of the store said the rep told her it's the same formula, different packaging...So now the owner feels bad and thanked me for letting her know so she won't be telling other customers it's the same formula...She was very apologetic because she knows Ginger has a sensitive belly. Needless to say, I will try ZiwiPeaks Venison-Fish DOG food next time to see if she really does not tolerate this food at all. _________________ |

| Her BM this morning was back to normal.
I remembered one other thing I gave prior to her mucous BM...it was a dehydrated sweet potato - it was kind of big, and I figured she'd be OK since she's had them before but they were more bite size pieces vs. this one which was more like a small marrow bone size...
Oh well, she's back to normal...and when I try the ZiwiPeaks Venison-Fish again, I'll be sure to make it the dog food!

| Glad she's back on track. You would think that it would still have been okay even though it was the cat formula. Weird. Hopefully the dog formula sits better with her. ZP is very rich though so maybe less is more? _________________ |

| It was only 2 tablespoons of the cat formula...or it could be the big dehydrated piece of sweet potato...either I would have thought would have sat well in her belly... But I will revisit ZP again, as I have those 2 trial bags of the Venison Dog Cuisine that ZP sent me _________________ |
