2. Read the Stickies and Announcements. Each sub-forum may have specific rules which trump the Forum Rules in cases where there may be conflicting information. Read the rules of each board before you post so that you are clear on the expectations of the staff.
3. Respect ALL Staff and Admins. These people volunteer of their time and MUST be respected as well as their word adhered to. They are responsible for maintaining a free, open, clear and organized forum. Anyone found to be openly undermining any official ruling by a staff member will be warned.
4. Signatures: One picture only and no links. Images: To keep the forum looking neat and tidy, we ask that members insert just one picture only in their signatures. The picture should be no more than 200x500 pixels and should be of an appropriate subject, for example, your dogs and their names. Should you need assistance creating an appropriate signature, please PM an Admin and we would be happy to help! This is to ensure that signatures remain a welcome addition to our forum instead of a cumbersome distraction. Links: Hyperlinks in signatures--unless to a personal blog or photo stream of your dogs (like Flckr or Piscasa, for example)--are strictly prohibited. Please PM a staff member with any questions or concerns regarding this rule.

PostSubject: Suggestions for placing 2 huskies for terminal cancer patient?   Suggestions for placing 2 huskies for terminal cancer patient? EmptyWed Aug 05, 2015 2:46 pm

Hello everyone,

I hope someone here can give me a suggestion on how to proceed. A close friend of mine was diagnosed with aggressive stage 4 lung cancer and has just gone on hospice. She has 2 female huskies ages 5 and 7 (she had 3 but was able to place the male in an adoptive home) and I have been trying to help her place the other two.

I would gladly take them myself but I am severely allergic/asthmatic so unfortunately it's not even a remote possibility.

I have contacted tons of places that are listed as no kill shelters but either they do not call back or their answer is always "we are full."

I am at my wits end with this. Can anyone give me any suggestions on what we can do so she doesn't have to worry about her beloved pets being killed? She is located in the greater St. Louis, MO area.

Thanks so much in advance.

I'm unsure about your area, but here in Louisville, we have a few Facebook pages for dogs to be re-homed or adopted. I would screen the people before just handing them off, but it is something to look into.

Have you contacted any rescues? Have you tried websites like this http://husky.rescueme.org/Missouri ? What about the newspaper?

There is a SW IL/St Louis Husky Huddle and Malamute Mingle group you could try: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1433890036911638/
It's a newer group so there are only about 50 members but you could join and someone there might be able to help you find them a home.

Thank you for the responses so far.  Echo's_Mom, thank you, I will check out that group.  Also Tyler.Jenkins.125... I often forget about Facebook as a resource since I'm not on it much and I don't have any connections in the St. Louis area; I never thought to search it for dog adoption.

Rumflower, I have contacted rescue after rescue, but as I said, they either don't respond or have been full.  I didn't think about the newspaper, but I'll check into the one local to her. I think we are on a fairly limited time budget so I was hoping for the rescue route so she is not any more stressed out than she already is.  She's a single parent with her daughter 7 hours away at college and she's often not well enough to even take visitors so it's a tough situation.

We did get a phone call today from a person who is apparently involved with huskies in some way that my friend has helped out in the past and she may be willing to foster them until someplace can be found, so that is hopeful.

Thanks again.  Smile

I apologize; I thought you said shelters. Rescues and shelters aren't exactly the same thing. If you were talking about shelters, I'm not 100% sure how rescues work, but if you haven't explored them it could be worth contacting some and seeing if they can help: http://husky.rescueshelter.com/Missouri If nothing else, they might offer advice. Others on here would probably know more.

Grasping at straws here, but in our supermarkets (looking at you, hyvee) people post ads for oopsie puppies in the windows a lot. Do they do things like that there?

I can't think of a way to get rid of a dog quickly. I would stay away from craigslist/oodle etc. type things as much as possible because you'll get a lot of scams, crazies and abusers.

I hope the thing with your friend works out well. Please keep us posted.
