| Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm not alone. Do your dogs ever infuriate you?
(Backstory) I have purchased 3 charging cables in the last 2 months. I know I should move my charging cables, but sometimes she gets up on the counters and sneaks them.
I am SO PISSED right now! She got number 4. I did well to walk away, tell myself she is a dog and doesn't understand she chewed up a 20 dollar cable. She knew I was mad about it because she kept looking at me funny. I did well to calm myself down and not do anything crazy, but sometimes it's hard when they ruin something important. What if it had been my macbook cable? I guess my question is What is a positive way to help her understand cables are off limits? |

| Tyler, good for you on keeping your cool. Seriously believe they don't understand what is yours until about 8 months old, in fact 8 months is about the age where things just click. They can go all night with out accidents in the house, or having to wake you to go out. Where they have some sense of understanding commands, with out you thinking, is this dog dumb, lol. There is indeed a transformation, and you will miss the puppy hood.
As for training, you got to do it in the moment, if you don't catch her eating it, there is no point in correcting her. She won't understand. If you catch her, a simple uh uh, and "Koda that's mine", may in time work. Keeping those items away from her is probably your best bet. The teaching of "that's mine" has worked for me, but then again, it may be she just understood and grew up. I do know that one of the first nights in our new house, I kept hearing her scratching, I thought maybe she was uncomfortable and went to check on her, and caught her eating my wood trim at the bedroom door frame. I did the "uh uh Miya that's mine" and she has never touched a door frame since, and anything that is mine I have done that. So take that with a grain of salt, I don't know why it worked but it has, anything that I have told her was mine, she leaves alone. |

| Last night I just held it in front of her and said "no" then I put her outside. I know I'll miss the puppy stage, but GOD am I ready for her to grow up already! I'm usually pretty good about keeping them out of her reach, but Sometimes I slip up and leave it in the living room on the couch or something. I'm so ready to be able to trust her. |

| Oh goodness if 20 dollar cable is the worst thing she destroys consider yourself lucky. Loki chewed a hole in the wall once when I went to shower and locked him out of the bathroom. He also destroyed my mother's couch eight days after she bought it.
It's ok to be mad. Do you have a fenced yard? If so put her outside while you cool down. It's sometimes hard to keep your temper under control when what your mad at is in your face. The trainer told us to get ajar fill it with rocks and shake it if you catch them doing that. That way it startles them but they don't associate your voice with punishment. Unfortunately if you don't catch her in the act there's not a whole lot she can learn. |

| Danielle, this jar idea is great! I'm going to do that. She has destroyed a lot of things, but I guess I got so mad because its the fourth time. I have a 40 foot lead I will put her on outside to do her stuff. When she first did it I took it from her and walked into the bathroom to calm down.
I for real will use this jar! That's a fantastic idea. |

| Yeah I definitely understand. Sometimes when they do the same thing over and over and wait until your back is turned you can't help but wonder if they're doing it out of orneriness LOL. |

| when we had ferrets i used bitter apple spray on the cable to keep them away from chewing them. when we finally though we had the ferrets chewing on thing under control except for are girl Ryoki. she was the wild child of the group of 5 . she decided to chew on some small speaker wires and it did shock her and decided to get vicious; like how dare you shock me I'll show you. after that she was wary of the wires but we keep an extra eye on her. Ryoki is the sable ferret and the black one is Hekage. RIP my fur babies. I also used it for Leo when he was teething, worked well for us, just don't let them see you spray them or they will check them to see if you've sprayed the cords . Leo to had a shocking experience one day when he decided to unplug the electric heater in the living room wail i was getting his lunch ready ; (i think he was about 5 months old) all i heard was a short whine and a thud type noise, his fluff was standing on end like he had just come out of a dryer. after that he doesn't go near the plugs or wall out lets. |

| You are definitely not alone. Brady went through a stage where he was peeing in the house (>=( ). I FINALLY caught him in the act and was able to reprimand him for it and we haven't had a problem since (*knock on wood*....actually interestingly enough he ONLY peed on hardwood floor, never carpet). As others have said there's no point in getting after them after the fact.
Oh man, I've always been worried about Brady chewing Through the walls! My friends all tell me im crazy but now I can tell them im not completely insane for thinking that! |

| Lol we've all been there i can reference to soo many things that made me want to strangle my pups some days.. but recently, I heard Memphis start screaming in the backyard, so I run out to see whats wrong..he dug up the whole side of the house and in the process tore a wire off the house and somehow got it wrapped around his leg and he was freaking out.. Yeah i was mad but i didnt lose my cool did some verbal punishment like "No, your a bad dog!" he got a time out..and a bath. Also for the wire chewing i would suggest the bitter apple or white vinager and I used a water bottle with pennies in it so whenever i caught these two being bad I would shake it and tell them no. It worked after a few times. Good luck |

| I typed a response to this 3 different times last night, lol, but I just couldn't word it in such a way where it didn't seem like I was blaming *you*, because that is totally not my intention!!! I don't know if it's just because I've had huskies such a long time, or of its cuz I'm just getting older and slightly more mellow, lol, but 10 times out of 10, I blame myself when my two (usually Mishka) do something that they shouldn't be doing...even digging holes!!! I blame myself mostly because I let them, they don't know I just spent $ putting it in for them. Anyways, my only advice, because most of its been covered by everyone else, is pretty much to just train yourself to be a little bit more aware of what is around Koda that she might enjoy tearing apart or even worse, harming herself on. It can happen in the blink of an eye! We are adults, huskies are basically small children, and we as adults have to keep them safe at all times, it's our responsibility. To this day, I'm still learning that, I havnt quite mastered it, haha, just not too long ago I set down a plant to water it, I KNOW Mishka is a plant eater, and I walked away from it, next thing I know Mishka is throwing up all over the place...sure she shouldn't be taking apart my plants, lol, but it was all my fault, * I* knew better, she didn't. Why? Mostly cuz she's the sneakiness lil husky on the face of this earth and I have yet to catch her in the act of anything!!! So she hasn't been taught yet, and catching in the act is KEY. |

| Thank you all for the responses! Spraying the chords is something I didn't think about, but it makes a lot of sense. This new charger is getting sprayed down! Jimmy, I completely understand what you're saying. I just kept saying to myself' "She's a baby, she has no idea." I definitely blame myself looking back, but in the moment, It is hard to rationalize that. I definitely understand that though, and I will try to think of it more as she's the baby and I am the adult. I guess I really just needed some empathy. It was good to hear I'm not the only one who's pup pup makes them angry somethimes. |

| Oh. dude. I completely empathize with you. Practically everyday it's something new (usually with Mishka, lol) most of the time it's just harmless things like having to refill a hole or replace a plant, then there are those "OMG! What . Did. You. Do!!!" moments ...and still then there are those moments where they (usually Mishka, lol) actually BRING me what they tore up/shredded/destroyed/no longer recognize with that bright eyed expression like "look what I did!!!" Or the "can you believe I did ALL this all by myself!!!" times where I...just have to let out a deep breath and smile cuz they're so friggen cute when they're possessed lil demons. I didn't want to sound like I was lecturing or anything, that's why I kept deleting what I wrote! lol, just want you to remember to breathe...and remember why you love her so much the next time, there always is a next time. |

| Tyler, I'm going to go another direction from what others have said. While I'll agree that taking a puppy back to someplace where they've "soiled" the carpet is about useless; taking them back to the cords and telling them an emphatic "No!" is, IMHO, a reasonable action. What you're teaching them is to leave the cords alone, you're not teaching them not to chew on them - small difference but a very specific difference is you see what I mean. When you take a puppy back to their pile and tell them "No!" there's nothing they can relate to ... in a lot of cases, teaching a negative (don't go near the cords) is a hard thing to do but at times it's not, this should be one of the easy times. _________________ “Properly trained, a man can be dog’s best friend.” Corey Ford . |
