| What do you use? The furminator for my akita and shiba just doesn't work well enough on Niji. It doesn't get down in the coat unless you really dig it in and then despite there being no mats you can't make the thing move. 2 different slickers have been utterly useless. We've been getting more fur pulling the undercoat out by hand one clump at a time. We just filled a grocery bag while watching tv with her next to us.
The dog fur in the house has reached critical mass and the dust bunnies are becoming self sustaining. |

| Furminators are really not good for double coated dogs anyway as they can cut and damage the guard hair.
I use a combination of an undercoat rake, greyhound comb, and a slicker brush. _________________ |

| My akita's breeder bought it for me. Everyone here uses them on the double coated japanese breeds and says how great they are. For all their reputation of blowing massive amounts of fur the akitas and shibas just don't have the undercoat of a husky with a proper coat. When you search undercoat rake you get a lot of furminators. I was looking at this with the wider tines http://www.petcarerx.com/jw-gripsoft-double-row-undercoat-rake/12315#14955 and half the price of a furminator rake. |

| My girl has a shorter coat than many, I only use a rake, and then pull clumps, lol, personally I use plastic teeth rather than metal teeth, but that's just me, I want it to be a gentle thing, otherwise she gets annoyed fast. Of course for me this is stretched out over several days while she is blowing coat, and then occasionally after that. |

| I just use a rake too, even with my pups thick coats...I get ALOT out of them with just the rake. I bought a Furminator and soon afterwards, heard how bad they are for our dogs (like Ashleigh mentioned) sure they work, but it doesn't mean they're not good for their coats, so I'm staying with my lil rakes. |

| We've been brushing everyone for weeks. The akita made fast progress like usual with her shorter but dense coat being rubbed and brushed out in patches and a steadily retreating line going down from her back to her belly. The shiba sheds out her sides and then we clean up her back stripe, butt, and neck with a longer undercoat than the akita but not as dense. Niji has gone nowhere except what we've managed to move with the furminator. She looks just as full of tufts and the more we examine the more we find what looks like fur still perfectly in position is still tufts of loose fur. Her fur is so tight it barely comes out on it's own at all and the furminator just skims the surface repeatedly. I feel like trying to comb one of the chinchillas. They have over 50 hairs per follicle where dogs are about 7-25 depending. |
