| I am new to this and wanted some insight on what I should do. I have a 3 year old male husky named Keida. I adopted him from his past owneres that neglected him. The day after I got him I took him to the vet and we got him back up to weight and healthy again. I have had him since February of this year. Well, Thursday afternoon, Keida, decided to get in the garbage can and eat not 1 chicken bone but 12. 12 cooked chicken bones. I understand what that can do to a dog and I have kept an eye on him since. I called the vet and also notified them. He has a sensitive stomach as well so anything he eats thats not his dog food, or a bland type of human food, it makes him not feel well. Friday morning, I woke up to Keida hacking and yakking. I got up and he threw up some chicken bones. All day Friday he had also had bowel movements with a lot of chicken bones in them (I was on poop patrol!). Saturday he seemed to be feeling a lot better but his normal dog poo turned into very runny dog poo and of course more chicken bones. Today (Sunday) He is acting like his normal self, eating, drinking, jumping, playing, laying around. I was sitting on my bed watching tv and he was laying in the floor next to me (totally normal for him). Then all of a sudden out of no where, he throws himself up against my bed. I had no clue what was going on. I got up and watched him for a minute. He started to get up and it was like his legs weren't working and he kept throwing himself on the ground. I finally realized he was having a seizure. As far as I know he has never had a seizure. Atleast he hasn't in the months I have had him. I am guessing from what I have looked up it was a grand mal seizure. I was not a pretty sight especially when your dog is more like family. I guess I am writing this to see if there's anything I can do, or what will happen, because right now I am unable to take him to the vet since my fiance is at work (he works all weekend long friday-monday) and we only have one car. |

| Getting to a vet as soon as you can to check for any damage is the main thing I can think of. Keep a close eye on him for signs he might be going to have another, keep him hydrated, and I wouldn't let him get too excited and do too much hard activity until the vet has done a thorough check. Check through this thread. Mer dealt with Seizures a lot with her dog Shadow and did a great job of documenting what was going on when Shadow was seizing and what all they went through for treatment. She also has a blog you will see in her signature on the thread. Shadow is having seizures_________________ |

| Hey, sorry I've been tied up with meetings this morning and am just now getting to this. The big thing that is an absolute emergency is multiple seizures in a short amount of time. Any more than 2 in 24 hours and you NEED to get him to a vet. Definitely with the one he needs to be seen soon to rule out metabolic issues. There are some liver and thyroid issues that are notorious for causing seizures, and it could be that the chicken bones did affect something. Your vet will want to know things like duration of the seizure, what it looked like, how he was behaving before and after, if he lost bowel or bladder control, and if he could have gotten into anything aside from the bones. Seizures suck a lot, and I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. There are a few of us here who have, and we're all happy to help as much as we can _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Thank you both so much! I was barely able to get sleep last night cause every little thing I would hear in the living room I thought it was him having another seizure. As far as I know he didn't have any seizures thoughout the night. I have been keeping a close eye on him now. And so far so good! He did eat some cooked white rice as well as some bread today and a little of his dog food. Which is also good because he hadn't had much of an appetite. I will keep everyone posted as to how he is doing. But as of right now he is acting like his normal Husky self. But he was also acting like himself before the seizure yesterday. |

| Update!!
Keida seems like him normal self, "greeting" people when they come over to the house, playing with Kain (somewhat anyways, he's never been too fond of Kain. Kain has all the puppy instincts, Biting jumping, playing, and Keida is always just chill and not up for always playing), "talking", and running around like a husky should!! No more seizures since the one, and he had a bowel movement last night and this morning, and they were regular!! I'm thinking with the chicken bones he ate, it may have just upset his belly, since he has such a sensitive tummy anyways. I have also been thinking the cause of his seizure either could have been from his seperation anxiety, we hadn't left him alone in almost a week, and Sunday I left him home to go visit my grandmother. OR it could have been from the rain and storm Sunday evening, he had to go out to potty Sunday and it was pouring the rain and storming. I'm not for certain either of those could have caused it but it's just a guess, kind of a coincedense. But I had been home since about 3pm Sunday and his seizure happened around 6pm. So I'm really not for sure what could have caused it. But as of right now he is doing great!! |

| Separation Anxiety or Storm Fear by themselves would not cause a seizure unless it was triggering some other underlying cause. Have you talked to a vet yet?
Glad to hear it hasn't happened again. |

| You should definitely still take him to the vet and have a blood panel run, you really need to rule out any sort of metabolic issue. Those can make them sick very quickly. Your vet most likely won't want to start any sort of treatment unless it is metabolic, but you will need to keep a closer eye on him from now on. He's kind of in that prime age range for the onset of idiopathic epilepsy, but hopefully it was a one time occurrence from the chicken bones. But seriously, even if he seems normal you still need to take him to your vet. _________________ Shadow's Blog Canine Hydrocephalus Support on Facebook "Being the parent of a special-needs pet means living your life constantly poised on the edge of a double-edged sword. | Seizures have a cause and they have a trigger. Separation anxiety and/or the storm could be considered a trigger. The cause still needs to be identified. The list of triggers is extensive and many of them come down to stress, both the things you mentioned are stressful to some dogs, but it doesn't mean they actually caused your husky to seizure. My last two huskies had idiopathic epilepsy and although I could never definitely pinpoint an exact trigger, two things stressed my boy out big time, the heater to the house coming on, and the noise from certain jets the military here fly around. The best advice has already been given to you...to take him to the vet and have blood panels done. But also, in my opinion, to make sure those chicken bones havnt done any damage as well. I wish you the best and really hope this was an isolated incident. |

| Sorry you have to deal with this. I agree, I would take him to the vet as soon as you can to have them do a full blood panel. When Yukon started having seizures at age 1 1/2 they wanted to rule out any toxins he might have ingested. It could be that he got into something, but if they don't find any toxins they usually just diagnose it as epilepsy. If he has more than 2-3 in 24 hours and there are no toxins they will likely put him on phenobarbital. Even if he is acting 100% normal, I would still get him in and get the blood work done so you can be sure. It is a terrifying thing to witness I unfortunately know all too much. |
