Hair question Empty
PostSubject: Hair question   Hair question EmptySat May 09, 2015 1:42 am

Hello my name is John and i am new to this forum. i have a husky just under 2 years old named quinn. Im pretty sure shes considered a woolly husky from the length of her hair compared to others ive noticed. Anyways  my question is about the hair on the back of her legs (you can see what im talking about by the hair on the back of her front leg in the photo). It is quite long and didnt seem to want to be "blown" last year with the rest of her coat. im wondering if it is supposed to be removed or just stay there, i think it looks kind of funny and feel it should be off in the summer time, and same with her tail it has a bunch of long hair that doesnt seem to brush off either. thanks for the help

Yup - I would say you have a wooly. As do I. You don't need to remove the leg and tail feathers - just keep them brushed. Though this past winter, in desperation, when Ami came in from heavy wet snow with HUGE ice balls embedded and hanging from his leg feathers, I did resort to cutting them out - he now looks like I butchered him Hair question 1625187496

I know its tough if you wanted a husky that looks like a husky and you get tired of explaining to people - "yeah, he IS full husky, he's a wooly, which is a fault and a recessive gene..." Ami's coat bothers me - my husband loves it and says "they should breed them to have long coats." Fortunately, Ami is neutered.

So - unless her feathers are full of burdocks or some other knotty problem, I really would not cut them - they'll only look choppy and the coat, left natural and groomed, will actually insulate them from the heat to some extent.

We went to the bank a few weeks ago and the bank manager has a wooly German Shepherd - says Ami's coat is nothing compared to hers. Yours looks to be the same or slightly less long than Ami.

I would agree with Amy it looks like yours is a wooly but not one with super long hair. If it does start to bother him or you you could take him to a groomer and have them neeten it up a bit. just make sure they don't shave him or cut off a ton otherwise you will have issues.

thanks you two for the help, her hair is medium length id say, the undercoat hasn't started blowing yet here in Montana even though we had a very mild winter by our standards. her feathers don't bother me or her really, she still loves to run and hie and swim haha, i just didn't know if they were supposed to come off with the rest of the hair or not.
