Spray v wait Empty
PostSubject: Spray v wait   Spray v wait EmptyTue Aug 11, 2015 10:35 pm

Hi I am a new member and would like some input.
My Siberian Husky is 61/2 months old and was booked in to be desexed on Friday however last night she went on heat. My problem is do I still let her have the operation or wait.
My vet has told me they will still do it but higher risk of bleeding. I have read up on what to expect and as she is outside when we are at work I am worried she might find a way to get out or a male dog find his way in.
I waited until after we had completed dog school before I booked her in wrong choice obviously.

If you are worried about her getting out or something getting in I would either keep her in the house in a room where she can't hurt anything until the heat is over or go ahead and have her fixed. Puppies are hard to get rid of and care for (especially if you don't know who the father is), and pregnant dogs can cost a fortune (far more than a mid-heat spay). Another option is to wait until heat is over and risk her being outside where anything can happen, then give her a shot when her heat is done to abort any pregnancy she might have incurred. I don't recommend this method but it is an option. I personally would keep her locked in the bathroom while I was at work until her heat is over and then get her spayed. Safer for everyone and cheaper as long as she won't eat the door or something.

Thanks for your comment I have decided to wait and get her desexed after her season has finished I got three vets comments and two of them said they do not do the operation when on heat as not worth the extra risk. Have to wait six weeks after her season has finished so I will be able to book her in again around October. Apparently its about 1 week that she is very fertile after the bleeding has stopped so will have to watch her in that period.
